transmission leak

Hello,

I have a 96 sunfire with a 2.2litre 4 speed automatic. The tranny started leaking where the driver side cv joint connects to the tranny. Any idea if this is something that I can fix on my own or would i need to bring it in to a shop.

I dont think its the cv joint it self but the actual tranny seal that is leaking??????

If it's a reddish oil, not a thick CV joint grease, then it would indeed be a bad thing. If it's thick, gloppy grease then it's the axle and you may be able to do it yourself depending upon your skill level and tools. If you have to ask whether to take it into a shop, I suspect that you probably will need to. Be careful too - transmission fluid is flammable!

if it is trans fluid, its probably the seal. you have to remove the axle shaft to replace it.

Its fairly easy, once you get the axle out, pry out the old seal, being careful not to scratch or nick the bore its seated in, then take the new seal, coat the lip with ATF, tap it lightly in so its nice and square then get a socket or some other sturdy round object thats just a little smaller in diameter than the seal and use a mallet to get it pressed in completely, make sure its pressed in evenly all the way around. Make sure the stub-axle is clean, coat THAT with ATF, and slide it in till it clicks. Seal replaced.

Thanks for the info, thats exactly what I was talking about. I just wasnt to certain if it was a seal or something more expensive. thank you very much.
