Misfiring, possible oil on plugs, obd-II not working
Wednesday, April 25, 2007 5:44 AM
I'd appreciate any help with this issue. Thanks.

I've got a 2001 Sunfire, Automatic, 2.2L.

The car began misfiring and shaking the other day to the point of a flashing CEL. I pulled over and went back to it with new plugs and wires. Two of the old wires broke off the second I touched them. The plugs for cylinders 2, 3, and 4 the plugs were covered in what looked to me like oil but I am praying was just gas. With everything back together the car is still misfiring like crazy with no improvement at all. I tried to scan the codes with two different scanners and neither one saw the obd-II port which has worked fine in the past. The scanners also worked fine on a different auto.

The scanner will not work right if your cigarette lighter fuse is blown. Make sure that fuse is good.

2.2's are known for corroding plug wire terminals at the coil packs. Check the terminals.

Thanks so much. That brief reply lead me right to my problem which was a simple fix. I checked the fuse for the cigarette lighter and it was shot. I replaced, scanned the car and determined it was cylinder four on which there was a ton of corrosion on the ignition coil side. I couldn't get it to shine again but $40 for a new ignition coil, two bolts and two plug wires later she was running great. Thanks for all the help.

No sweat. Glad it was an easy fix.
