Hey Guys,
Just took my 2001 Cavalier into the dealer i was experiencing a massive power steering leak. They told me that I require a new Power Steering Rack and it would be 750 plus tax I told them to go ahead with it
Now that im thinking that seems a bit high to me what do u think? did I just get scammed? lol
Thanks
Chris
Key word in your statement "dealer".
No to bad in price for a dealer.

The seals on the rack are non repairable, the rack must be replaced.
Lots of FWD you must lower the subframe to remove the rack, which is why labor is so high.
Consider this lets say the rack was $200. So you have $550 in labor, well lets your dealer charges $90/hour, well that is about 6 hours labor cost. Which if you have to lower or remove the subframe isnt to bad actually.
Keep in mind this new rack means new inner tie rods, and alignment, that does not include outer tie rod because inners are built with the rack, outers arent,.
Anyways no that isnt to bad of price at all.

Well thats good to hear lol never had to have this repair done before so I had no idea what was involved!
Thanks
I did it myself on my old thunderbird. It was a pain in the ass. I have no idea what it takes to do on a J-body. I'd assume its more difficult, just less space to work on. I got the part from a wrecked mustang for 20 bucks though.
I did my best guess at the alignment. Drove it around till it felt pretty decent........When I burnt through a set of tires in a month I took it to be done professionally. It was laughably far off......but not too bad for eyeballed I guess. I think he said it was 5 degrees off centered.
