Ok, my girlfriend was having problems with her 95 cav 2.2 ohv...it was stalling out and sputtering etc...so she took in to some local shop and this is what they said needed to be done...(all prices in CAD)
replace ecm - $338 for ecm $100 labour (yea....right)
Tranny lock up solenoid - $200 labour $75 lock up solenoid
Tranny filter/fluid/additive and treatment - $200 total (wtf?)
replace head gaskets - $660 labour and $275 for headbolts, thermostat gasket set and antirfreeze *NOTE* i have no doubt that this has to be done, but i do think they are charging a ridiculous amount for it....how hard is this to do? i'm contemplating doing this myself...and was there a gm recall on replacing the headgasket?
Replacing exhaust - $200 (this does NOT need to be done, especially not for $200)
replace powersteering hose - $175 incl labour
For a grand total of...........$2500....please, the car is worth half that and it only has 150K on it...i think these guys are trying to rip her off...i've driven the car, the tranny is fine other than more then usual roll back when putting the car in park, it doesn't slip or anything....
Some adive would be great so i can tell these clowns to stick it up their ass....plus i want to know what i can do myself. thanks in advance.
Edit - i never drove the car with the problem, my gf took it in b4 i got off work. it's just sitting there now waiting to hear back from her...i think the car may have been missing judging by the symptoms she described...hard to keep it up to speed, sputtering some stalling, LOUD etc.
thanks guys
wow my 2001 2.4 cavi is doing that as we speak, its at the shop right now. well i dont have the car back, but the mechanic wanted me to come and test drive it, with the work they've done so far: cleared CEL wich was for the Air intake temp, it was disconnected and ran somewere with speaker wire, so it was thinking it was 40 degrees out, therefore adding more fuel, wich was at 70 psi, replaced the fuel pressure reg and now its at 59 psi, wich the AFR was showing rich for a while, now its ideal/lean, fuel filter clogged, and now replaced, cracked coil holder thing(white peice that the spark plugs connect to)had a huge crack in it..it runs alot stronger, much faster and more responsive, still idles at 600 rpm, and tries to stall out, computer throws no codes, just the ST switch or something on the scanner runs to -45 and it stalls, restart its at 0,-3 and its great, then it starts to die again, will find out more tomorrow. oh yeah and the cleared the tranny code, the trac control was off. shifts smoother now.
seems we have the some of same symptons, i dont have a price for it all yet, but pretty sure we have the same problem, and totally different answers, i filmed what it was doing when they had it on the scanner, i can upload some were and you can see if your GF's is doing the same thing, i wanna update on what they tell you please.

no. just no.

there's a wire you can cut to take care of this yourself, if you're having problems with it stalling when you come to a stop. otherwise, doesnt need any work.

dont bother, this you can do yourself, get a chiltons manual.

again, get the chiltons manual. its easy as hell on the 2.2, just make sure to get the gasket (theres only one) and a set of head bolts, if you dont have a torque wrench, buy or rent one, you'll need it.

if there's no holes, dont think twice about this.

any noise from the pump/leaks from the line? if not, dont need it.

got my car back, it was stalling and sputtering repair bill was 450.00 they replaced the fuel filter, plug boots, fuel pressure regulator, coil pack, and coil housing, reset computer, added an air temp control wire(missing from the turbo set up). good luck with your ride. oh and my problem was caused by a fautly AFR connection.
Haynes mannual or Chiltons mannual. Or you can log onto Autozone.com and click on repair guides. Hell, I can do all that plus change my clutch, given proper tools and a garage. I changed the power steering pressure hose for $65 (new oil included and 1 hr labor). The head gasket package comes together with other gaskets ei: coolant passages, egr, intake manifold and exhaust manifold. yeah, I remember when I took my car when I first bought it to a local mechanic, where he said that this car was not worth fixing because "rebuilding" would be worth about $2,500. I've drove past that shop every day for the past 5 years.
