Radio stays on when door open
Tuesday, December 12, 2006 4:44 PM
Hi Everyone,

I have a 2000 Cavalier Z24. I'm having trouble with my radio in that it stays on when the drivers side door opens. I thought this may have been caused by the button that is compressed when the door closes being stuck, but this is not the case. When I open the passenger door, the radio sguts off like it should.

This is getting frustrating, as I have to manually shut the radio off every time I get out of the car.

Any ideas on how I can fix my problem?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Dan

really your radio turns off when the pass door is opens? only my drivers side does that but even when you only open the pass side the lights come on?

get an aftermarket radio with no box, you'll lose that and your door chimes, like killing 2 birds with 1 stone

Yes the lights come on when the pass door opens.

So could the button be broken then? As I said, it goes in and out just fine, but perhaps the sensor under it is broken?

You guys need to RTFM.

READ THE @!#$ MANUAL

You guys need to RTFM.

READ THE @!#$ MANUAL.

The radio, and clock stay open until the door is open about 20% of the way. Nothing is wrong with the car.

This is in the owners manual, if you would bother to read it.

^^Thanks but the radio stays on when the door is fully opened.

As I said, the radio goes off when the passenger door is opened, but nt for the driver's side door. The button isn't stuck, so it must be something else.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the useless advice i said i did not know that when the pass side door opens the radio SHOULD turn off because mine does not but if you only open the pass door the light still comes on so does that mean that the switch is not the prob?

1) Get a can of WD40
2) Open door
3) Make sure button is depressed
4) Spray switch shaft w/ WD40
5) Success

^^ Thanks for the advice, but the button compresses and depresses fine. I also thought it might be that the button was stuck and used some WD40 on it, but it compresses and depresses fairly smoothly.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help thus far.

it is the door switch. the door switch needs to move perfect for the shaft to ground out that circuit.

are your lights comming on when you open the drivers door? if not it is 100% the switch.

go to your local pick and pull and yank one out of another j body or older grand am, etc. and install it. if you break the tabs that hold it in, just use some rtv sealent to hold it in place. ive done this once already, fixed the problem of my lights not comming on, thankfully it was on a 98 and didnt have the class 2 wiring that allows the radio to stay on when the car is turned off but the door hasnt been opened.
