While running? In gear or idling? Or just key on, not running?

Either alternator bearing of idler arm pulley.

Oops, meant to say alternator bearing OR belt tension arm pulley. Mine is doing the same. Does anybody know how difficult it is to remove the tensioner arm?

Thanks, I will check it out today. Mine makes a noise all the time. Especially now that it's cold. Sometimes it sounds as if it's coming from the alternator and sometimes from the tensioner arm pully. I've tried the trick with a stick to my ear and the other end onto the alternator and then the tensioner arm, but the noise seems to go right through everything.

J-TECH tuner - I've just had a look at my 2.2L 1998 Cav. There are 2 idler pulleys for the serp. belt. One is fixed and is near the alternator. The other is on the tensioner arm which is located down below and is spring loaded. I think the noise is coming from the pulley on the tensioner arm. Is it easy to remove the the tensioner arm? I cannot see how it is fixed to the engine.

Ok sorry, I see you have the 2.3 so it might be different to the 2.2L Does anybody else here know how to remove the serp. belt tensioner on the 2.2L and how difficult it is? My Chilton manual makes no mention of it.

well the tensioner belt my be the same. if your under the car and your able to look up the side of it youll see a 15mm sized built right under the alternator, its kind of hard to see because its back in the bracket.

ES, on my 2002 pushrod version, obviously the

motor mount bolts must be un-done in order to

make room for removal of the belt tensioner assy.....

(Factory service manual should give "procedure")

Solution to squealing noise is to replace idler pulley. I've seen them advertized for under $20. Seems to be a bit difficult to replace though. See here -

Listen to your bearing with a long screw driver or pry bar. The sounds you hear should help you to isolate the item in question.

Tried that. Once the noise starts it seems to come from the alternator or idler bearing. I'm going to take the serp belt off and try and feel by hand for a rough bearing. Many times you can feel a bad bearing by turning it with your hand.

what do you mean by bearing? how would i find it? could it be a vacuum leak?

Idler arm pulley , No one EVER listen to advice from this guy.

Anywhoo, get a can of penetrating oil with the red tube straw and spray down your accessory drive belt one pulley at a time, then you can Isolate where the noise is coming from :2cents:

Quit trying to save face you dumbass.

1. Rack& Pinnion streering systems DONT use Idler arms
2. Idler arms dont have bearings

Yep the sound you are hearing is your water pump. It has gone bad.

You may or may not have been able to tell with my diagnosis method.

Anywhoo just put in the wrench time or shell out the cash and you'll be golden.

Take the serp belt off and run the engine for a minute or two, won't hurt anything in that short time. See if it still makes the sound. If not then it's probably the water pump.

You jackass, I know friggin well the Cavalier uses rack and pinion. I never at one stage meant the steering system. "Near the steering box", could just as well have meant, "a noise near the steering reservoir and pump".
For for your information, the words idler arm and tensioner arm are interchangeable words. And both can have idler wheels. Idler arm does not ALWAYS mean you are refering to the steering system.

You should try and extend your vocabulary. Read a few books! Books about auto engineering.
