Coolant fan operation

My 2002 Cavalier has a problem with the coolant fan. It runs when the AC is on, but not when the engine heats up in traffic. Anyone know what controlls the fan? Is it the engine control computer? Or, is there a switch that turns it on at a preset temperature?

Any links to a wiring diagram?

Thanks,
Al

how far does it heat up? does the needle go all the way into the red?

on my 2.4, the fan doesn't kick on until it goes a little past two marks above the middle mark.

If it makes it to red then it's probably the engine temperature sensor.
