Okay about every half turn of the steering wheel. I hear a clicking noise. I checked the all the boots(tie rod and cv joint). They look almost new. I dont know what it is. Any suggestions? Ohh yeah and I started getting a burning smell like tar or something coming form the car.
Have you inspected youre front brake pads?.
NO not yet. I'm doing a brake job this weekend though. I did t think those would cause the clicking noise though. I'll look at em real good anyway can't hurt though. IM pretty sure they're low but working properly.
I also get the same sound!

I just had new tires put on and an alignment. car drives and run fine but i get the click/pop sound too at certain points... like its jumping a tooth or something.

matt its somewhere within the steering linkage... and i think you feel it trasmit all the way up to the steering wheel...
what exactly do they fix on the " steering recall "
I dont think mine is covered under the recall but i'd like to know what the repair is so i have an idea of what i might be looking for. this seems to be a real common problem and no one seems to know what it is.

if you can, put the front end on jack stands, have a buddy turn the wheel and take a good listen to see if you can pinpoint the noise a little better. find out if it's in the sterring column, the rack, the cv joints, anything. normally clicking on turns is a telltale sign of a bad cv joint, but if yours are good then i'm not sure what it could be. good luck hunting it down.
ill try that tommorow sky, this isn't clicking while turning though, i may have misinterpreted your post, this is a click/pop sound when turning the wheel, while moving or not. i was under the car today and pushing the tires with my hands and didnt really notice the noise, odd.

it might be something in your steering column then. try listening for it while you're in the car if you don't hear it outside the car. might be part of the steering column. does it just make noise? does it bind up? see if you can find the noise when you're not driving down the road so that you can attempt to pinpoint the area it's coming from. then, go from there. might be the joint in the column, could be that one of the bearings in the column fell apart, could be a lot of things. happy hunting
those are a great read. thank you. luckily i don't have that problem, in fact there isn't any actual " problem" per se, its just annoying. if all its ever gonna do is click then. oh well.
but a question, say i had to work on/ replace the rack or pinion or something, do you have to pull the motor ? or do you have to remove that subframe assembly ? its kind of buried in there.
