I have a 96 2.4L cavalier. Everytime I star the car my check oil light stays on, but I have oil, this light is even on right after I get an oil change. However if I turn the car on and immediately turn off, then back on the light goes away. Do you think this happens because of a bad sensor? If so is it the sensor thats on the oil pan, and if so how do i go about changing it!

could be you oil sending unit switch, Or even slowly failing oil pump.
Bad sensors are pretty common on the 2.4s. Could be the oil pump, but they're pretty rock solid usually.
Seems to be some confusion here. You are talking about the 'check oil' light, not the 'low oil pressure' - is that correct? Because one is much more of a problem that the other.
The check oil light, you seems to refer to, only reminds you to check the oil quantity if you left it get too low. CAn you clarify.
Good call Mike. That sensor I'm referring to is the "check oil" (as in level) sensor.
The oil pressure sensor is different, and is a sign of problems.
I believe its the Check oil sensor because right after an oil change the light is still on even though its full. Where is this sensor located!

I have the same problem as Jay Blake on my -96 2.4L Cavalier LS and I also believe it is the oil level sensor that's acting up. Could anyone give me a spare part number (original) for the sensor. I live in Finland where the cavy has never been imported to. I asked at a shop that specializes in American cars, but they didn't have the sensor listed in their system. They said that if I can dig up a part number for them they would order the part in for me. Any help is greatly appriciated.
The sensor is right under the starter on the side of the oil ban closest to the front of the car(should be brown color). You need an ice pick or something similar to get in there and release the tab holding the wiring in place. From there you just turn the whole thing counter clockwise and pull it strait out. I think it goes in about 3 inches. I just got one out of a junk yard, Im pretty sure the same sensor (part number) is on a lot of different GM models.

Ok, I just copy and paste from rockauto.com .They have the oil level sensor in three brands, hope this helps with the part #.
Thanks alot. I'll take these part numbers to the store I visited earlier and see what they can dig up. Really don't feel like ordering the part from the U.S and having to deal with customs and all that if I can get it from a Finnish dealer. Even though it'll probably cost me at least double or triple the price listed on rockauto.com. But hey, that's life
You can take the sensor out and try cleaning it and its elctrical connector who knows if that will fix the problem..
