picked up an 01 cavalier with some junk, nearly bald no-name tires. i got a humming sound over 40mph, so today i thought maybe if i swap the front / rears it might go away, now instead i get a loud humming sound UNDER 40mph... i know that sounds really weird it tends to go away after i reach that speed. I plan to get new tires tommorow but could this be something else? a bent rim maybe? I have black steelies... any help appreicated.

wheel bearing maybe. Try swerving side to side and see if when you turn one way it's worse.
Better hope it aint wheel bearings. Those stupid one piece hubs are expensive.
If you're getting new tires tomorrow then just wait until then. If it doesn't happen then it's fine. If you still have the problem come back and let us know what's going on so we can try to help.

Sold 6/30/06.
will do. somehow i don't think it's wheel bearings. the sound doesnt change at all turning in either direction. also i examined the suspension components and some items look new.

ever get new tires? did it fix it?
ok guys got the new tires, the whirring/whing sound is completely gone. oh yea.
however. when i turn the sterring wheel (stopped, moving, whatever) i get these " pops " at specific points, the guy that did the alignment gave it a once over and said it might be a problem with the steering linkage, is there any common problems that the cavaliers have that i might want to look into ? i really dont like taking my car into the shop at all. i tend to do most things myself if i can.
