I am gong to change my motor in my car, and I have a 97 Z. But I need to know if a 96-97 grand am 2.4 will work with no problems?

As long as your going with a 2.4 ld9 swap to a 2.4 ld9, then it should be no problem from what Ive heard.

96-98 all the same. Different transmission though. Obviously different computer and junk like that too. But the motor is the same.

the timing components were changed in 98 (atleast the tensioners from what ive read), i know the kit i bought for mine had both. I think the trans was the same from 96-99 no? Even the auto was a 4t40e right?
J Body = 4T40e, N Body = 4T45e That's what I meant.
There are minor changes in each year, but you can take the whole motor and it would have all the same plugs, bolts, and locations to drop it straight in.
So, all that i need is the motor? That is the jist that i am getting........Or, do I need the computer too? I have been told that the grand am tranny has taller gears? True? Better?

The motor is the same, no differences. Things like exhaust manifold and intake, computer, tranny, junk like that is different. If you were to swap the trannys, which is a lot of work, you would need the granny's computer.
Thanks alot bud. So I need take the exaust manifold, intake and what else off of my current 2.4 and swap it to the grand am 2.4?

Not sure but you may need to swap the power steering pump. I did a swap in my car that required that but mine is a 2000 Cavi and I was using an 99 engine but I'm not sure what it was from. Any way just look at how the hoses hook up, that's where the difference is.
Thanks for all the help!!!!Any other suggestions?

I found a motor out of an '01 sunfire that has half the miles of the grand am motor, and only 100 bucks more. can I use this 2.4 in my 97?

Nope. Different comp & no EGR on the 00+. Stick with the grand AM motor.

If I were you I'd spend the extra just to get a direct drop in.

I think you mean: take the intake and exhaust and stuff off the current, put on the new, then drop back into place. That's correct. You don't need the Granny stuff, it fits the n-body, not our cars.
I will stay with the grand am motor I guess. i was just hoping to have found a good deal. The g.a. motor is $500 w/90,000 miles, and the sunfire was $600 w/45,000 miles. But that is the way my luck goes. Thanks guys.

That's a pretty good deal. Just guessing that you're not the type who 'appreciates' all the 'improvements' made in '99. Using the newer motor is going to be more of a hassle or cost more, or both (usually the case).
What do you mean by the "improvements" made in '99? I appreciate everything about my J-Body. I will drive one probably until I am no longer able to drive. I love everything about them, and plan to customize mine to the fullest legal extent. But please tell me of the improvements in 99, because I did find a 2.4 out of a 99 Alero. Let me know please before I buy any motor. PLEASE!!!!

Well jbaringer, all everyone is telling you, To do is just stick with 96-97 grand am 2.4 motor swap, Its just gonna save you alot of trips to the part store or junk yard for lite convertions, Ive done a few 2nd gens engine swaps 4 cyl's to 6 cyls, Bit of modding I had to do, things worked out.
Good Luck though with youre swap.

Oh, i thought the 4t45e was only on the V6, or was that a 4T60e?
Thanks for all the help. Did not want to ask stupid questions, but had to make sure that I do everything correctly. Once again thanks.
