My Sunfire (2.4) is having problems with gas mileage fluctuation. Sometimes I'll drive out a quarter tank within 70 miles and sometimes I'll drive out a quarter tank and have a 100 miles put on it. I'm not driving the car any differently either way...any ideas? Oh ya, it has a new fuel filter, both o2 sensors are replaced, new plugs, new boots, and the injectors are good..and i just replaced the o rings on the injectors about 500 miles ago.

Temp has a lot to do with the way gas is consumed.
It it's really cold which i'm sure Ohio gets that way just like it does in Iowa.
The colder it gets the computer tells the engine to use more fuel for colder air.
It could be other things also but thats just my .02 cents.

Temp has almost everything to do with it.
So in this case, if its a persistant fluctuation, then inspect your IAT sensor or coolant temp. sensor.

yeah but cold weather isn't gonna drive your gas mileage down near 10 miles a gallon....otherwise my dad's truck would get like a mile to a gallon...this is a drastic loss in mileage....I just don't know what else there is...ac delco platinum plugs, new boots, coils have been checked out ok...new 02 sensors, I don't get it

Back before my trip odometer crapped out, I was logging gas mileage. There was steady decline (about 5-7 mpg) as the temps got colder.
Cold air = denser = more fuel needed to maintain an AFR needed to keep the car running.
Can almost think of winter as a cold air intake, similar effects in a way
just cuz its cold doesn't mean he now gets the same mileage as a V8? cold weather or not, he should get 20+ mpg...we're not new to J cars...this is like our 4th winter owning one
Ok, so it's cold out..so I drive the car a 120 miles and it's slightly under half a tank?? I don't think so....I've drove in the winter before...not to mention problem started in mid september....wasn't too cold then.

that's something i was thinking....are you able to buy it by it'self or only with the fuel pump?

1/4 of a tank = roughly 3.75 gallons. Going 100 miles in 3.75 gallons is almost 27 mpg.
actually the 1/4 mark on the tank is less than where it should be. I get 100 miles at the 1/4 mark and fill up and it comes out to be 24.5 or 25 mpg. If you get 120 or 130 at the 1/4 mark you're doing good--about 32-33 mpg.
Basically, if you're calculating at the halfway mark (more accurate) and you're at 210, just divide by 7. 24mpg*7=168 miles, 25mpg*7=175 miles, etc. etc. The most I got at the 1/2 mark was 238 (just below 35!)
At the 3/4 mark if you're at 350 you're getting ABOVE 35 mpg, because the real 3/4 mark is slightly below the larger white marker.
This with a 2.2. liter baseline 4-speed auto.
he sits right now...147 miles....half a tank...I know my sunfire same motor/trans was around 200 by then
Mine does the same as well with cold temps hitting the central states, before my gas mileage barely moved when it was warm but now its cold as heck and i notice my gas gauge gradually goes down or when i let it sit to warm up when its cold in the morning.
Ok, so let me get this straight.....all of you guys are saying because it's cold out....that means it's normal for me to get 200 miles out of a full tank of gas????
