change the filter only. Add fluid till full. Dont flush it out and put in new. It will wear more!
If you have the 3T40 tanny you'll have a dipstick with a red handle. If you have the 4T40E tranny there is no dipstick, just a little red cap hidden under the air box area.
As stated, don't flush the system. Simply remove the pan from the bottom, change the filter (it's pretty easy really). Replace the pan, then add about 4 quarts of fluid. You may need to add a little more or a little less just depending on how much came out. You'll either have to go by the dip stick, or by a little fill hole on the side of the tranny.
Use only Dexron 3 spec fluid. Do not use ATF fluid, that's for Chrysler trannys. Dexron 3 is very close to Mercon (Ford) fluid, so many fluids are made to meet both specs. One type is not 'better' than another, they're different.
A filter kit with a new gasket can be picked up at any auto parts store for about $25. Get the kit, not just the filter.
Where is the filter located?

When you pull the pan off the bottom you'll see it, can miss it. The filter is used as the fluid pickup...
