Im posting this for a buddy of mine. He has a 97 Z24 with the 2.4 and an automatic transmission.
A couple days ago, while driving down the highway, the engine just died and would not restart. For the past 3 nights Ive been working on the car with no luck. It cranks, but wont turn over. All the fuses are good, its got gas, its got air, and the ignition control module tested good.
Im doubting its compression, as it wouldnt just happen on the highway, right?
Im pretty much down to trying to figure out how to test for spark.
Any thoughts?
Sudden death, could be a lot of things.
Cam chain - pull the cam sensor (left-front side, one bolt) and crank it. Should see the cam moving.
Check for spark - remove the cover, flip over, set it upside-down on the cam covers. Reconnect the wire to the module, clip in a spark plug to one of the boots, use jumper cables to ground the plug to the body or the block - NOT THE BATTERY, unless you like exploding batteries. Use the other jumper cable to ground the cover also.
Failure to get a spark could be the crank sensor also.
Did you check the fuel cut-off switch? The fuel pump should run for 2-3 seconds when you first turn the key on. If the fuse is good but the pump doesn't run, check the fuel cut-off switch. A bad fuel pump relay would kill it too.
Any chance you could borrow a scan tool from a parts store to see if there's a code?

Yeah, sorry. Didnt post all I should ahve.
Fuel pump is pumping.
Have already replaced the crank sensor.
Borrow an OBDII from my work and the car shows no codes, but we had the battery off for like an hour while doing the crank sensor before I scanned
Okay, Weve replaced the spark plugs, coils, wires and ignition control module. Put in a new battery. Still no good.
We are thinking fuel pressure?
A possibility.
It maybe pumping but it may not have to right pressure.
Best way to test for fuel pressure is while the enignes cranking, smell for gas... I mean the type that'll get you 420'ed (not that strong, lol). If you smell gas then its going to be a sparking issue.
Could also be the fuel pressure regulator.
Hope it helps
...They just HATE it when you ...POINT - LAUGH - then DRIVE OFF AND AWAY-!...
We changed the plugs last night and they reeked of gas.

BTW, this is my car and didnt know Dave posted this till today. Wheres the fuel pressure regulator? I know its pumping, the fuel filter is the first thing I replaced and the fuel pump I tested and it spewed gas all over without even trying. So I really doubt its the pressure...at least the gas tank side.
Havent checked the cam sensor either. But I would have figured it would throw a code.
Thanks!

Okay, even though it spewed gas everywhere, doesnt mean your getting the right pressure. It means your getting some pressure.
The fuel pressure regulator is located to the left on the fuel rail (the small "filter" looking thing). It has a vaccum line on the top that leads to a part of the tb.
Hmm... so the plugs reeked of gas. So this mean no firing, or not enough or an over amount of fuel drowning out the plugs (pointing back to the regulator). Did the plugs even show signs of firing? How did the boots and inner springs look?
The Cam sensor is a good call too.
running out of help to give to you.

ok so did u end up testing for spark yet? i've had this problem had to me 3 times now.... DROVE ME NUTS
my car didnt have sparked... tested and checked everything... well turns out a wire in the main harness had broke.... for me its all been in the same general place, along the front bottom rad support .... its a pain in the ass... but i got a shop to find it for me $200 later...

Can you describe the location of this a little more?

Yeah I was playin around with the regulator the other night...just looking it over, trying to figure it out...
Latest batch of replacement parts:
Fuel Rail
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Camshaft Sensor
Even reset stock theft system.
Still does the same thing...Turns over, but doesnt start. Im at a real loss here. Scratchin my head and what not. Whats left aside from a new car?
Thanks

I told you I would come look at it but I need some gas money. It may be a wiring problem and being you got the car from me I know where the wiring problems are on it. It would be easier for me to drive down there rather then trying to explain it to you on the phone. Give me a holla, you know my number.. I think you have probably wasted a lot of money by now. lol
And on that note, I need a new sig, I still have that car in my sig.
And for the record, the car is a
96 not 97.
