timing chain tentioner

i replaced the water pump and what FUN that was and now that its all togather my timing chain is rattling real bad and when i put it togather i squeesed the plunger on the tentioner and it stayed compressed and i thought it would decompress when i turned it over but i guess i was wrong. has any one else had this happen and am i correct?

When you squuzed the tensioner, it goes into a 'locked' open position. If you squeeze it again it should pop back out, and be fine.
I believe that some of the tensioners have a release hole that you poke to reset.

ps. be sure you didnt loose time with the open tesnsioner and running the motor.
