Rattling Cat??
Monday, October 02, 2006 6:53 PM
My 98 z24 5-speed 127xxx has a bad cat I beleive. There is something thats rattling under the car. I checked it out and it appears to be the exhaust, almost directly under the front seats. One of my freinds said that theres rock like thigns in the Cat and that they are broken/loose. My question is, can I replace just the Catalyic Converter, or is it an all in one job? One other thing I had a question on, would this change my mpg? As we dont have tests here in MI, can I just take the Cat out and put in a pice of pipe? How much should this cost? Thanks, you guys(and girls) are quite helpfull.

ps. spell check isnt working with safari right now, so excuse my improper grammer and spelling.

Nathan,

The rattling noise you hear is the "Honey Comb" inside the cat. This comb basically mixes the leftover gas fumes with air to make it safer for our environment. (At least thats what I was told). The comb is bad and has started to break apart, thus the rattling noise.
Yes, you can buy the same OE cat or buy an aftermarket cat and have the old cut off, the new wielded on. You can also just cut it out and run straight piping but its illegal in most states (Not mother earth friendly) . It should not effect you cars gas milage.

Hope it helped!

Wow, that kills 2 birds with one stone. I had a rattling, but the exhaust wasn't rubbing anywhere. Guess its a good thing I'm replacing it anyways.

The price is pretty much what you wanna pay for.
OEM: As stated by IamRascal $200 and by you from dealer $580 (Hint- No)
Junkyard: Prossible around $50-100 (depending on milage and junkyard) And get the lowest possible!
After Market: $50-150 (New and name brand) Just make sure to check the ID and measurments

Ebay Offer- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVROLET-CAPRICE-CAVALIER-CORCICA-CATALYTIC-CONVERTER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33629QQihZ018QQitemZ280033216326QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Just to name a few.

Glad to be of help.
Let us know the updates( Nathan and IamRascal)
