Is my waterpump going????????
Friday, September 22, 2006 6:57 AM
2001
Cavailer Z24
2.4L Vin t

This is my first 3 gen and 2.4,its at about 111,700 KMS not miles,i was just sitting for a good 20 mins yesterday waiting for someone and listening to some music etc. When i notiched my temp gauge went higher then the 90.

Like up into the 125 mark, not the red thow

i didn't hear the fan kick on either,so i went for a drive and sure enough it went right back down to 90,now heres the thing,i've been haveing problems with my AC and heat,my freon is gone and when the heat is on it begins to cycle so i could'ed turn the fan on for very long.

I know i need a new belt also as its very dirty or pulleys
are because it makes a screeking noise like those damn dodge caravans do.

Now i did notich once before a little puddle behind the passenger wheel, but all my levels where fine,

Is there a problem with my cooling system or isit just the sensor

The 2.4's pump is pretty rock solid. They go bad, don't get me wrong, but it's fairly rare.
The problem you describe does sound a lot like a head gasket. Missing any fluid?
Also, the water pump isn't belt driven, it's driven by the timing chain.

Water Pumps and Head Gaskets are the worst to replace for our cars...The water pump is in our timing Chain and will cost you allot to replace. It cost me about 1000...hate our cars for stuff like that...

Really at a 100k my head is already going,i bought the car at 32k so i know what has been done and not and the car has never gone up like this

thats good to know about the water pump i thought it was belt driven and not from the timeing chain.

now would i have to support the engine when i remove the engine mount and what puller would i need.

O god do i miss 3.1s

Ok first off the puddles behind your passenger wheel is condensation, simply put those window A/C units you see running got water dripping out, well same thing on your car. So don't freak out. Now when it turns green and and smells like the @!#$ you put in your radiator resevoir, then freak out and look for leaking spots on the engine. Second when you are sitting in one spot for a while your engine temp will be higher than when your driving, cause while your driving air is getting forced through the radiator to cool the fluid running through your engine. No your pump is not bad, but you may want to replace your thermostat those good bad way way sooner than the pumps. I hope this helps.

I believe it is more common on 96-98s, but not that comman after that. I beleive GM redesigned or did something to it in 99.

well its normal for a j to have the temp gauge do that. i wouldnt really worry unless you start seein' a coolant puddle under your car after its been sitting for a while.

Please don't attempt to work on anyones car. The only thing the timing chain runs is the cams and the crankshaft, it does exactly what its name says it keeps them in time. The water pump, alternator, oil pump are all belt driven, by guess what the serpentien belt or what ever you want to call it. But if you have ever hooked anyones waterpump up to their timing chain, you should sit down and re-evaluate your job and mechanical position.

rotflmao timing chain, water pump, lol lol lmao

The water pump on the 2.4 is indirectly driven by the cam chain. The 2.2 water pump is belt driven.

just about all VW's have the water pump driven dirrectly off the timing belt

I know you guys like to rag on my mechanical abilities, and I've made plenty of mistakes, but the 2.4 and 2.3 water pumps are directly connected to the timing chain. They're a very small design that gets very little stress on the bearings because the sproket that drives it has it's own set of bearings. They usually last longer than traditional style water pumps like the 2200 has.

By the way, I'm not a mechanic; I'm a computer tech.
DurtyDawg: Let me guess, you don't own a 2.4L do you.

Did you work on your OWN car? With all those mods you have.......and you don't know the pump is driven by the timing chain. That's why it costs so MUCH at a garage to have a $40 water pump replaced.

No, your abosolutely correct in saying that i do not own a 2.4, I have a 2.2. No I did install the mods myself, I'm mechanically inclined but I know where to draw the line. Also I'm a computer tech also but I like to expand my horizions into other areas. I'm going to research this further also, and if I'm wrong then I will apologize to all of you. Well not all of you just C.T.S

OK........C.T.S. after getting off work and shuffling through my Haynes & Chilton books your statement proves to be true. So I do apologize for the sarcasm. Now that I have finished eating crow and pulling my foot out of my mouth, what specific field of computers do you cover, I work for the I.T. depart at my local college while attending to get my assoc in Comp Networking, and I do DOD Networking in the U.S. Army.
