oil pan?
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 7:51 PM
so i come home yesterday and my car bottomed out a little bit coming up my graveled driveway. Then i leave school tonight and my oil light comes on. So i pull over into a gas station and check my oil and there was almost none in there. I thought it was because i havent got an oil change in over 4,000 miles. so i put a quart in and the light didnt come back on. When i got home my dad checked the level and said it was empty. we went under the bottom and the oil was leaking out. now we couldnt really see because it was dark. so im hoping its the oil pan. however, if it was the block that was cracked, wouldnt the temparature be out of whack?

i doubt that it would be the block.......the pan is going to be the weak point there...put it on some jack stand and slide under and find out were it is coming from

Bottomed out a little bit? At 45 mph? I've only ever did that one time to an old Dodge Spirit I had and it took a pretty hard bump to pinch a hole in the pan. Either your oilpan was severly rusted and by hitting it you cracked it open, or you bottomed out harder than you're letting on.

He never said anything about 45mph? Just get under your car and see where it's leaking. It should be pretty obvious.

Chances are oil pan. That happened to me a little bit ago with my Cavy. It sucked, aluminum oil pan = weak. Cost me close to $600 to get it fixed: tow, parts, labor . I was pissed, I couldn't find an oil pan for it anywhere so therefor couldnt' do it myself and had to pay ungodly amounts for it. Needless to say, I'm more careful now.

yeh there is a crack in the pan. we looked at it today. We ordered another pan from syracuse for $85. We looked for a gasket. We checked everywhere. they all said to use RTV silicon sealer. the blue one. does this sound right?

RTV sealant should work fine....i would just keep an eye on it for a bit to make sure no leaks happen.

Well yes, I did notice that. I was just trying to point out that simply bottoming out on a gravel driveway would not be enough to punch a hole in an oil pan, believe me I know.

My brother had a 1990 Cavalier RS that he punctured the oil pan when he hit a big hole one time. All he did to fix it was to let the oil drain out overnight, pound the puncture flat with a hammer, rough up the surrounding area with sandpaper and he sealed it with some of that coldweld stuff. It worked, never leaked a drop after that. Only cost him 10 bucks for the coldweld and a jug of oil.
