acceleration problems

I recently had to replace the belt tensioner on my 1998 cavalier with 2200 motor. Before this was replaced I had zero problems with the way my car picked up. Now when I accelerate quickly my car feels like it has mud in the engine . Sometimes it will accelerate as normal then just slow down. also when this happens my temp gauge goes down . When I slow down past 70 it levels back out . What could be the problem ? Is it possible for the belt to be TOO tight ?

could it be that with the old tensioner it wasn't putting much tension on the belt and other pullys and now with the new tensioner it actually has to do its job (thats what it sounds like especially with the temp guage thing),, you should be able to pull the belt about a half inch or a lil more when its on
