A quick question guys, does anyone know what year GM installed the theft system in their cars? Was the first year 1996 or 1997? Thanks

Not sure of year, but check out the radio and see if it says PassLock on it. I'm guessing it would have started with the 3rd gens.

The reason im asking is because i have a 1995 sunfire se and i swapped a 1997 engine in and i have a 1996 harness on the engine (the 1996 and 1997 engines are the same). I was told the 1997 was the first year the theft system cam eon the cars but when i went to start my car up after i hooked everything up it idles for two seconds, then dies out (like the injectors are being cut by the theft system) and if i go to start it again without turning th ekey off i cant. I need to cut the power and start it again.

I believe 1996 was anti theft system for cavalier and sunfires, Is the engine you installed a 2.4 or 2.2L?

You may need to use the the ECU and wiring harness out of the other car.

Heh.... that's THEFTLOCK and that's only a radio feature

All 96+ J-cars came with PASSLOCK... which is the fuel kill if you don't use the right key.
