ok, i just bought a sunfire 97 with 2.4l in it as a winter beater and now i have this weird problem.
when i start it up and start driving, the rpm and temp stop working, all the lights on dash light up. only speed and gaz gauge works fine. now when i plug a obd2 reader, all the lights go back to normal, unplug reader, and lights come back!
also it act like if the alt was bad, it has a rough idle and i need to floor it so i dont die on a light, but after a while it drives fine. i tried to just hook my battery from my cav which runs really good on the fire, and same problems, it dies!
also all electrical fonctions are SUPER SLOW!!! like it takes 2min to roll up the windows, sunroof, the wipers are super slow too.
anyone have an idea of whats going on???

could be the alt takin a dump. while it's runnin, hook jumper cables from another running car to it and see if it cealrs up.
tried that and no change....
if that aint it, i'd say your cluster is bad...
yeah, i'll try an other cluster tonight or tomorrow.

i have swapped the cluster and same thing. i also swap computer with my 97 z24 and it still does the same thing!!!!
i'm lost now and cant figure what it could be.

id check battery grounds..
Take the alternator into any place and have them test it. I'll bet it's putting off erratic voltage.
Hmm... its sounds more like what Jonathan said. Bad gorunds or (in my opinion) exposed wiring or the cluster relay going bad.
An alternator going bad normally eats away the battery. If the battery is going bad, It'll affect the whole car (as to not starting up or keeping running). However, I could be wrong.
All in all, your wire hunting.

Take your booster cables and make another ground from the battery neg. to the engine and/or body and see if that works.

but now the idle problem is fixed, i changed the fpr.
my main concern is the cluster acting weird....

I had the same pproblems, my negative battery cable wasn't grounding good to the frame, make sure theres no corrosion, if everything's good and still aint working, i dont know what it could be except the alternator.

Mine same thing while driving all the lights came on then off putt putt poof car died ...alternator..
You do know that theres like 20 diffrent wires that give input and output to your lights ..I.E VSS VSO MIL BATT ignition, data link pwr gnd etc... how would each light come on if it was the instrument cluster ..Each wire is a diffrent light or switch there only tied in at the Pcm Your getting surges of power more and less from the alt. the brushs get dirty wet worn out and that when it needs to be replaced ...mine went in a rain strom in the middle of butt funk nowhere

ok, but the car is running good, its not dying or anything, it runs perfect. only the cluster is acting weord and power equipment are SLOW!!!
i'll try to hook another neg cable on the battery and check the ground of cluster, then we'll see.

hmmm this is got me thinking .. Well there is the ignition switch that has two switch in it one has a start and bulb test in it that might be staying on the on pos, maybe a bad ground some where you do have a manual or chart of the engine warning light system right? take a look where the grounds are and go from there
