My co-worker knows how to woork cars, but he thinking about getting a 97 Z24. I think it's a 2.4l hi output, but he said it haves 159,000 miles on the motor. He went to check it out to see how it runs, but he notice that cams feel loopy when he turn on the engine. He asked me if they are hard work on and if it's even worth working on. If he gets its the car worth $350.00.
P.S. Thanks in advance, because I have clue on that motor. I only know the 03 to 05 ecotec 2.2l engine.
well if he doesn't by it I will. LOL thats a hell of a deal for $350. Yeah there easy to work on if you know what your doing... Just replace the cams and seals, head gasket, etc. And you should be alright.
mae sure he dont mean the timing chain is bad, they aint TOO bad to change. make sure you get the wole kit with the chain, and guides and all, and make sure to get a new tensioner, preferably a spring loaded one,not the hydraulic one.
there's no such thing as an Ho 2.4. A 2.4 is a 2.4. 150hp and that's all.

2.3 Ho
thanks guys for your answres I let him know
Yeah, if the engine has any little problems I would just rebuild the whole top end. You can get kits from most auto places: If you have a napa around you, get items: NGAHS5929, NTP90390S, NGAGS33365. That's a head gasket set, timing chain set (chain, gears, guides...), and head bolts (never reuse head bolts). Total cost would be $542.
Probably want to take 5 to 10 off the head itself, clean up the surface. Another $75 or so.
All totaled you could still have a 97z with a
good engine for under $1000 (before tax). That's a deal in my book.
If you really feel like going at it: Toss in new piston rings (PC 41872CP), main bearings (CEBMS2056P), deck and hone the block. But most have found the bottom end to be very solid. I have several cars with the TwinCam or Quad4 and all have been good to me.
