Fuel System Issue?
Saturday, June 10, 2006 12:41 PM
01 z24 164,000 miles and I think...my fuel pump is going out. I have had it not want to start a couple times now , what happens is it fires up and then sputters and runs like crap a minute then dies, I give it gas but that just wants to kill it. It eventually starts and runs ok but she is kind of sucking gas. I want to say its the fuel pump but I am not sure what the fuel sending units exact role is? I have also been driving once and just lost power with no response from the accelerator....but then started right up.....I know its not the ignition system cuz she fires just fine....so got to be fuel

Its all about the pain...The Jewelry and Ink are just souvinirs

Have you ever changed your fuel filter. I would try that before i messed around too much.

I would do as Evan suggests, before investigating further, if that is not the answer.

The fuel sender is just a variable resistor that is varied by a float in the fuel tank.
As the fuel level increases, in a GM car, the resistance increases from ZERO ohms at EMPTY to 90 ohms at FULL. This causes the Fuel Gauge to read FULL, EMPTY or anything in between as appropriate.

Other makes of cars may/do use different resistance readings on their gauges

Anyone can correct me if I am wrong!

In the later GM cars the fuel pump AND the fuel sender ARE ONE unit and are replaced as such.

Hope this helps
