I'm posting this for a friend of mine that I work with since he doesn't really have access to these forums.
It's not a J-Body Pontiac, but I figured it's worth a shot to ask anyways. The other day, he was driving home, went to shift from 3rd to 4th and nothing. The shifter WILL go back into 4th, but it doesn't catch the gear.. plus he can put it into 4th w/o clutching. 3rd is the only driveable gear he has. He's been told numerous possibilities including "it's just low on fluid", "sounds like a cable popped loose" and "your whole transmission is @!#$". I've yet to be able to really look over the car to see what the deal is.. but the clutch fluid looked ok.. but I've never seen a resevoir with a rubber sock looking thing in it before.. so I wan't sure what was "full" or not. He showed me that the shifter would ONLY go from 3rd to 4th.. and when it did, it made a loud (more than usual) noise, but I couldn't see anything.
I know that's a bit vague, but I'm hoping someone here may have an idea as to what may need to be replaced or what we can check on the car.
Oh and it's a '96 Grand Am 2.4 5-speed.
TIA

being that the car is that old the tranny might as well have just gone out on him, tell him to check the shift cables for any tears or wires poking through. Have hime do this while someone is moving the gears from inside the car. Also try and move the gear handle (thing the cables attach to on tranny) if it moves freely it is most likely just the cables. If not if it hesitates or does not move at all really pm me for a tranny ill cut him a deal.
i can put it into 2nd through 5th without grinding or using clutch (along with many others prolly)...but thats besides the point lol
