now that the warm weather is here, my car becomes super hot and comes within 1/8th of an inch to the warning zone on the temperature gauge.......
what can i do to keep it cool??
fan comes on fine, i run 10W30 synthetic....... coolant is fine...... its nothing out of the ordinary, its just that summer is now here and warmer weather doesnt keep the engine cool, unless im on the highway of course....... on the highway its perfect....... but as soon as im stop and go it becomes HOT
try using redline water wetter, it works for me

forgive the stupidity, but since i don't want to go out and buy some now to read the directions, does the water wetter go in the oil, radiator...?
GO PATS!!!
just poor it right in to the coolant resevoir
your thermostat is stuck open

if it was stuck open then it wouldnt even get hot becuse coolant would just keep circulating throught the system a being cooled off.........if it had anything to do with the thermostat i would say it would be stuck closed.....
It could be several things. Like was already mentioned about the thermostat. You might want to change that out just to eliminate it as a possibility.
Also, make sure you don't have an intermittent problem with your cooling fan not coming on. This happened to me when the fan motor went bad. If I was driving at highway speed there was enough airflow to kind of "jump start" it, but if I was in stop & go traffic it wouldn't kick on. I figured it out by pulling over when the motor got hot & tapped the fan motor lightly with a hammer. Then it would come on. You'll need to replace it if it does that.
You probably know this, but DO NOT stick your fingers in the fan while the car is running.
It could also be your coolant temp sensor isn't reading correctly.
I'm assuming you've had the regular cooling system service done on your car as Dexcool can "sludge up" a little if you leave it in there too long.

if your thermostat is stuck open it will do exactly what he said in his first post. because it is open, during the summer it will not have a chance to sit in the radiator long enough to cool down so it is constantly heating. during the winter when it's cold because the water is constantly circulating it doesn't have a chance for it to heat up.
i'll bet 4 dollars it's the thermostat. put your money where your mouth is!
Well Ive had people ask me questions as well. For me I usually trouble shoot the cheaper way of finding out the problems, like thermostat / coolant flush / hoses / coolant. Usually once those are ruled out, common factors are water pump / Rad / Or Head gasket.
Usually often problems of high temps happen:
1. Thermostat.
2. rad needs to be replaced / Or blockage Needs Flushed, Or temp sending unit has Malfuncted.
3. Water Pump wornout.
Note I have used those extra Coolant additives Like Red-line wetter Water, It works very well, Only if you have a a clean and good cooling system for functioning. Usually overheating and increased temps due to blockage or improper flow of coolant.
Hope these tips work for ya.
Good Luck.
