Hi again everyone...
I have a 96 z24 with the 2.4L DOHC Engine with a 5 spd tranny... i had Synthetic oil put in for the second time last week and my check oil light is now coming on... the light comes on when i start the car after he sat for 5 or more minutes and if i turn it off and back on right away it doesnt come on... can anyone help me solve this problem... i wonder if the is an oil sensor that might need replaced ....
there is also possibly a slow oil leak when i park on steep hills...
i had the same problem with mine the first time i put synthetic in I never could figure it out but after a week or so i tried changing the oil again this time not using synthetic and never had any problems since so i dunno might try that. But i dont know why it would do that with synthetic i may of just not tightened the bolt good enough check that
because synthetic has cleaners n @!#$ in it, just lik sea foam (my light turned on in both of my 96's when i used sea foam for first time)
it has to be something with that it knocks stuff lose or in the way of the sensor or something ive even take both sensors out and cleaned good with brae fluid but they still come on when i turn the car on cold, they obviously wor cuz if i turn it on and off real quick it will go off it just responds slow the first time so i get a light. One car i taped the light off other car just live with it.
Either way its just a level light so it doesnt hurt anything you can probably replace the sensor like 40.00 and it should fix it gotta love them 96's no wonder why they only put that sensor in there for one year
My low oil light was coming on and off for a while. I finally replaced the sensor. When I took the old one out, the little floaty thingy was broken and most of it was missing... Now with the new sensor, the light will sometime come on just for one trip, even with the oil slightly above full. I wonder if the missing pieces to the old float are still in there...
also could be because synthetic oil is slipperier (lubricates better) it needs less oil to lubricate everything sometimes switching from regular to synthetic on high mileage vehicles can cause it to burn oil mind if I ask if you had an oil burning problem? if so its because oil is getting past the rings and into the combustion chamber
What if you used a 10w/30w or 20w/50 syn oil see if that helps.
Ive been using Mobil 1 5w30 for amost a year, no check oil lights, must be something with the sending unit, not the oil.

same here
yea and do either of you even have a 1996, thats the only year they even had a oil level light. which would explain why you dont get it

My '95 Cavalier had a check oil level light
Also, make sure the new oil filter has an anti drain back valve in it that works. You will get low pressure on a cold start up if has failed, also some lifter tapping to.
the orange fram doesn't have the valve( the cheapest) but the higher priced ones do i can't rember which on i use i belive it is white but it does have the valve and also says in on the side of the box.
i too get the oil light, it started once after i curbed over by mistake, and now it comes out every now and then, my plan is to just replace the sensor and see what happens.
ive been using high milage synthetic 5w30 valoline even before the light started to come on.
