so, this just recently started. about three years ago (my car is almost 5 yrs old) i had the a/c compressor replaced cuz it was seized (under warranty). now, the clutch when idling or coming to a stop goes on and off, on and off, on and off. i tested the plug for continuity and its fine. what i'm thinking is that maybe the compressor is overheating, and the circuit is turning it off. why would it be overheating? my thinking (and research) says that maybe there is a low amount of refrigerant, and needs to be recharged. this doesn't happen when i'm on the highway or moving consistantly though, in which the outside flow of air would be providing additional cooling.
any ideas?

Buy a R134 charging kit. This is the one that has the guage built in to the tank and hose assembly. If the guage shows the charge is low, recharge it. The charging kit is $20 or so at Advance or Nationwise.
It cycles on and off when it is low on refridgent.
If you have a gauge set you can figure outself if it is infact low.
the high side pressure should be 2.5 X ambient temp., and the low 2.5/ambient temp.
In other words as a kind of general spec 40 psi low, and around 175 for a high

mine does the EXACT same thing to a T.
ive been told by other on jbo that it is probably low on refigerent. i havent done anything more to figure it out however.
i also know that my cooling fan isnt working. so it could be heat plus low refig or either or.
wotn be checkign into it for another week or so.
The biggest hole, is the illusion of invulnerability.

low side or high side, either way it isnt good.
low side = 2.5/ambient temp
high side temp = ambient temp times 2.5

so, i figured it out.
turns out it was the fan relay.
i realized eventually that my car fan wasn't turning on, and this was even when the car got to the 3/4 mark and when the a/c was on. so, i replaced that relay ($15 freakin dollars at the auto parts store! it probably would have been like 10 or more at the dealer, so i figured what the hell). and sure enough, once the fan kicked on, it would cool the compressor enough to keep it running even when stopped or idling.
yay
