It was not GM's idea, it was the German's who created the motor!

i believe it is mostly a convenience thing to have it on the top of the motor. i believe the ecotec is an opel design that GM stole when they purchased a chunk of them. alot of European car manufacturers use a canister filter like the ecotec does as well.

as far as i can tell, the main reason to use a canister filter as opposed to a normal oil filter is to reduce the amount of waste and "bring the cost down", even though canister filters are bloody expensive.

the ecotec isnt the first gm to do this. i remember doing an oil change on an old oldsmobile that had a canister style filter in it too. it was different though, the canister was underneath sort of, it was actually part of the oil pan. the filter just slides into it.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

The early Chevy small block's also had a canister design until 1967. When chevy introduced the 350, and they changed all small block's to a "spin-on" filter. I like the
small canister design on my '03 Eco, little mess and easy to get to. Unlike some of the other cars iv'e worked on that have the damn filter sideways. That always makes a mess, yuck.
