HELP: Using Diacom on a 88 Sunbird Turbo
Thursday, April 20, 2006 3:44 PM
Hi I purchased a Diacom program and cables. I successfully used it on my Fiero so I know the software is compatible with my computer. However, I can't get the darn thing to work on my 88 Sunbird GT. This car is listed as compatible in the glossary and has a footnote which indicates it used the alternate ALDL cable which is also used with the 5.0 and 5.7 TPIs of this era. I tried both cables and tried connecting in all the modes (ALDL, Diagnostic, etc). The engine grounds correctly (flashes the codes on the check engine light) using the software when it tries to connect under diagnostic mode.

I checked the car wiring and the serial data line is connected to A9 on the computer and is outputting at 5 volts at the ALDL connector.

I also tried running the program under the /N and /F functions. I've run the program under DOS and Windows.

Help. What am I missing?

Thanks,
Bob

Can you read the codes with an OBD-1 scan tool?

The Sunbird turbo ECM isn't compatible with WinALDL, however it is supposed to work with Diacom and I know Syclone/Typhoon owners use it. Since it's the same computer and since it's listed in the manual it *should* work. Anyone used a Diacom on a Sunbird turbo?

Never answered my question....

Can you take an off-the-shelf scanner and read your codes? I'm trying to narrow your problem down to either the car, or the software. If a code reader (not the pin trick) can read your codes, then its an issue with the software. If it can't, then the problem is in the car.

I don't have an off the shelf code reader. Can you tell me what exactly this is and should I invest in one or is there another way to trace the problem to either the software/hardware or the cable?

Do you have a turbo Sunbird? If so, which cable did you use and did it work for you?

I don't have a turbo sunbird... You can go to Autozone and see if they can scan your car, they'll do it for free. That would tell you if an off-the-shelf scanner works or not.
