so i got a 97 cavalier 2.2 and driving normal the temp is fine but if it sits for any amount of time the temp starts to climb...my moms old 96 did this as well but her 03 will sit all night long and idle and the temp stays normal...will a new thermostat cure this problem?...if not can someone tell me what will? thanks

The 03 should be an ecotec so you really can't compare, but yeah the 2.2/2200 have to go up to like 3/4 on the gauge for the fan to come on. The fan comes on with the air conditioning on so that will help when sitting. Also this is from wild weasel's webpage and you may want to check it out. There's a topic on this site about it, but I just happened to have this one bookmarked.

My '03 sits right at 195 all day. The sensor for the gauge and PCM have seperate wiring, might be as simple as a bad PCM temp sensor. Get it scanned and see what the PCM thinks, it's what turns the fan on/off.

I need to install this fan switch as well. I saw another method that uses a relay. Is one better than the other. I'm more comfortable using a relay myself.
mine will run perfect 195 but when i turn it off.. and go to start it 2min later it will be like 3/4 to red then i start it and drive and it cools right off..weird it heats up the most after i turn the engine off. but never had any problems from it
Yeah that happens because the water pump is no longer spinning but there is still alot of heat left in the engine.
I believe that is correct.
I would check
Fan, make sure it comes on
Leak, any leak?
thermostat
Water-pump
Head gasket leak or cylinder head
Wild Weasel's method makes the ground for the factory relay causing the fan to come on. I've been considering adding a seperate 10 or 12 inch fan since there looks like there is enough room next to the factory fan. I think that would be somewhere in the 60-70 buck range. If you try that make sure to use a relay cause a regular switch may not be able to handle the amps. My Lynx (Escort from Mercury) goes up to 230 befor the fan kicks in. I check the schematics in my manual and it shows 225 for the switch to make if I remember correctly.
Same thing is happening with my 97 2.4L and I just hope that it's not the water pump. My a/c doesn't work either.
lets hope it's not the Head Gasket

Do you have to add water everynow and again and mysteriously can't find any leaks? The 2.2 is notorious for head gaskets.
