A few weeks ago I ran my battery dead. I had just driven 12 hours straight thru the night and forgot to turn the lights off. I jumped my car, and everything seemed to be working fine.
A few days ago, I was going to pick up some food at about 10PM. I turned my headlights on, and there seemed to be an unusually long delay on the HUD lights coming on. After about 5-10 secs they came on, but so did the service light. After experimenting with the car, it became apparent that the only time the service light came on was after I had turned the headlights on. The service light continues to stay on, even if the headlights are turned off, until the car is turned off.
I dropped my car off at the dealership yesterday evening, and I just received a call that my car is done and nothing is wrong. The service worker said that the service light was coming on because my head-unit is tapped into the dimmer switch. I've had the head-unit installed for 2 years, and I have never had this problem until this week. Now I'm going to pick up my car, and the service light is going to turn on every time I turn the headlights on.
Any suggestions as to what is wrong? Could running the battery dead have effected the electronics somehow? My manufacturer's warranty is up in 3000 miles, and I want to make sure anything that's wrong is fixed. All input is welcome. Thanks.
The headlight delay and the service engine soon light being on is probably a coincidence. I had a problem with my 99 Z24 headlight switch. There was a delay when turning on the lights and the lights would turn off out of the blue when driving down the highway. Not a very good situation to be in. Anyway, I would try to move the headlight/turn signal switch (at night) with the headlights on and see if there is any problem. Also try the turning the brights on and off a few times.
It could be a relay. They are under the hood in the large rectangular fuse box near the fender on the drivers side.
or you might just need a new bulb.

i had that exact same prob on my 01 z24, but i knew it wasa bulb. the service light wouldnt come on when i started the car (cause the drl run on the high beams). just when i turned on my low beams would the service light turn on.
if your lights ae working fine, then i have no idea.
I honestly have no idea what could be causing it. I don't think I need any new bulbs. I think that the service department at the dealership didn't want to deal with it, so they just told me that the problem was caused by my radio. I've had the radio installed since the first month I had my car, and I've never had this problem before.
The only time the check engine light comes on is after the car's headlights have been turned on. The car seems to be mechanically sound, so it must be an electronic problem. I even tried disconnecting the fuse tap, and just putting the regular fuse in the fuse box, effectively disconnecting the stereo. The service light comes on, even with the stereo not tapped into the dimmer fuse.
I think I'm probably just going to take my car to another Chevy dealer and tell them about my discontent with the service at the dealership where I bought the car. Hopefully they'll be able to help me get this straightened out before my warranty is shot.
