I'm looking at buying a 1997 2.2/ auto cavalier and the guy said that the speedo is a little geeked. Searching on here leads me to believe it's most likely a VSS. I'm going to look at the car alot closer pretty soon and have 2 simple questions about the VSS.
I understand the VSS on this model to be accessible from the top of the bay - it has a single 10mm bolt holding it down, and uses a single purple wire.
Q#1 - Is that true? (please help me if it isn't)
I also have learned that once I find it, I need to remove it and check it for shavings that would indicate a junk tranny.
Q#2 - Do these ever just plain old go bad - or should I pretty much naturally assume that at 111k the trans is ready to pewp out?

the vss has 2 wires going into it
the vss is a good cause of irratic speedo movement
it is also a magnet so stuff tends to stick to it , there will always be a little bit of stuff on it , its when its excessive that it causes problems or is the indication of a problem
no it dont it only has one wire, purple is correct, and yes its held in by 1 10mm bolt and its not connected to the trans which means no trans shaving are on it only whats floating around in the crank because it measures the crankshaft of how fast its spinning and its on the back of the block on the trans side! they dont go bad ussually alot of it has to do with the computer maybe u got a splice in the wire that when it vibrates it sometimes makes a conn or not but usually if its block with shavings that means your bottom end is not doing to well lol but i would check it anyway and check the wire to see if its not corroded

thee vss is in the tranny, you have to get under the car to get it. yes they do go bad and something they go bad because they are magnetic and when the shaving from the trans get on them, it doesnt send the current to the cluster causing the speedo not to work. if there are shavings on it, then the tranny will more than likely go in like a month or so

Sorry, but thats just wrong.
As stated above, the VSS is in the trans. Otherwise, when your driving down the road, and you put your car in neutral (still moving), and rev up, your speedometer doesn't change. The VSS measures the output shaft speed on the transmission. It also DOES have 2 wires on it, one yellow, one purple. I believe the one you are talking about is the knock sensor.
