okay, so I'm going to go wash my car tonight, and I'd like to powerwash the engine while I have it there. I've never done it before, and I've heard some people wrapping up the alternator when they do it. should I wrap it up?

I don't. Just cover the air filter.
still got the stock box, so it should be good. thanks for the info Tom.

I washed my engine one time and it started bogging out on the way home....I guess it was something to do with the distributor....I let it dry overnight and it was good the next day.
Anything Electrical MUST be covered. I suggest plasticwrap, cause ive seen tinfoil spark during the engine washing process.
Things you should cover so there is no chance of anything going bad tooo soon.
* battery
* fuse block
* DIS blocks
* Alt
Yeah, wouldn't be bad to cover stuff up... but keep the motor running while you wash it for sure, and dont directly blast the alternator. I've washed mine several times like this and its always fine. Air intake is always a concern to, but with the stock box you probably dont have anything to worry about
If you get alittle water in the intake its fine. Little water is actually a good thing, alot of water is not.
another thing to do is to shut it off, wash the rest of hte car and hten go to the engine, basically to allow the engine to cool down. YOu dont want cold water blasting a hot engine. Ive seen thick blocks on V'8s (whihc by the way run cooler) crack ebcause of this, can also warp the head, exhaust manifold etc. Cold on hot is a bad combination. So let it cool down, then fire it back up and wash it that way.

Hmm i think if your engine has never been washed before there must be alot of crap in the nooks and crannys here's what i do Let the car heat up bring it to a coin-op turn the engine off .spray it with de gunk engine cleaner (degreaser) losens up the oil and crap there will be a little cloud of steam/smoke ...no fire while its stil hot start the car spray the car down with soap then water note while the engine is running the alt is spinning and making wind keeping water from getting unless your spraying it dead-on! just don't be stupid with the gun afterward grab a cloth and wipe here and there and grab a beer sit back enjoy p.s. if the guy in the booth turns his car off just to let it cool down for a hour so he could wash his engine in my area there would be a chalk-line of him next to his car!
