1990 Pontiac Sunbird HELP Please
Sunday, January 22, 2006 10:37 PM
I have a 1990 pontiac sunbird le with a 2.0L OHC K motor....I have been working on this car for about 2 weeks trying to figure out whats wrong with it. This is becoming frustrating to say the least. The problem is, after the car has sat for about 6 hours it takes about 20 mins to start again. It just cranks and cranks. After a while it catches and runs fine the enitre day. The motor runs great. It still has a problem starting after it sits. When i get in the car The fuel pump comes on, i can hear the whirr. When the car cranks there is no fuel coming out of the injector. I cleaned the injector, and when i finnaly get the car running it spays fine and even. I thought this may be a fuel problem, but i tested the plugs, and when this condition occurs, there is no spark also. I thought it may be a problem starting when cold. I replaced the coolant temp sensor because the temp gauge on the dash fails to go past 120 deg. The weather has warmed up a bit and still the car wont start even if its 50 out. I also thought it mighnt be the coil, so i replaced that also. The car has recently new plugs wire, dist cap, timing chain. The funny thing is, if i leave the key in the ON position for about 10 mins, the car will start fine usually within 5 sec, even in the morning. Theres is no CEL or anything indicating where this problem is coming from, because when it starts it runs really smooth..any help will be greatly apperciated...thanx

Its possible that the problem would be the ignition itself. If the problem was the battery the car wouldn't even turn over, at least not without a jump start.

The problem based on ur post is clearly ur ignition module which is inside the dist cab it will have a 2 wired plug and a 4 wired plug going into it.Advance auto parts sells this part called ingnition module/control unit and Gp sorenson part#EL123 cost $24.94 or the Ac delco brand part# D1964A cost $64.94.Check the store for availability in ur area.I feel pretty sure this is ur start issue with out a ? and is a pretty simple job to do.I know this should correct the issue at hand and if after installing and same issue post ur finding hopefully it will be the car is straight and ur are smiling.OK the oldschool jbody guy.

Sounds like both the fuel pump and distrubutor crapped out.
