A/C Compressor Clutch

Hello everyone...

I had my '97 Z24 in for service a little while back... (at a dealer )

(Loud noise coming from under the hood, sounded like a fan problem)...

they said it was a bad A/C Compressor Clutch... $400 (give or take)...

my question is...

can i just disconnect this?? (if so, how difficult)

is there a fuse I can pull??

what functionality will i lose??

How difficult would it be to replace this myself???

Please let me know...

thanks in advance!!

Just buy a used compressor.... my Z started doing the same thing (making a grinding noise all the time). I bought a used compressor from a guy on here for $50 and installed it myself, and no more noise.

Or there is an AC-delete pulley you can get to put in its place. Check out this thread to learn a little more about the pulley.

And one last option is to take a screwdriver, etc, and pry out the clutch plate a little bit so that it doesn't rub anymore. This is prob the easiest solution. Don't pry it out too far, though, or it won't catch when you turn on your AC (if you care; if not just pry away).

Okay there is a simple solution to this. Now A/C was an option right for your year? You can buy the belt for the non- A/C cars and just use that and not route it on the compressor. That will take care of the noise because the A/C compressor isnt on the belt anymore.
