Fan Belt maybe????

whats up everyone? I have a 2000 cavalier with the 2.2 2200......i just bought the car about three months ago...everything sounded fine till this month i started hearing a sound that sounds like "when your ears ring from loud music" and it makes that sound at idle but when i tack the engine up to 3000 rpm its gone......but another sound is made when i tack the motor that high, which that is where i think i need a new fan belt... i also thought it was the alternator but i opened up the hood while it was running and it wasn't...all i know is that sound is coming from the side where the belt, alternator, and pulleys are......so what do you guys think it could be?

Fan belt? Our fan are electric. The belt on the side of the engine is called a serpentine.

I had that problem once... I replaced the tensioner, thinking that was the problem. Lo and behold, the noise continued.... until I replaced the belt. I could have saved myself the money by starting with the cheaper option

(Mind you, I have a 2.4L... no idler... well... until I added the GM Supercharger, that is).

For the 2200, the GM service manual says to remove the belt first, then run the motor. If the noise stops... replace the belt. If that doesn't solve it, then move onto the more expensive parts.

Alternator? My 1999 Z24 was making a whirring noise. Increased and decreased in pitch w/engine speed. Got a mechanic's stethoscope and pinpointed it to the front alternator bearing. Replaced it with a new one.
