ummm thanks for the info
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

why? cause they are both entry level GM grocery getters?
If you take out the differences in engine management and the rear suspension being more of a baretta layout. They are pretty much the same. GM just redid a newer J-body IMO. Get yourself an 03-05 cavi or fire and put a supercharger and suspension with the money you save.

but the level of interior comfort you get in the new cobalt SS is just too cool to pass up!
the new SS cobalts have a lot of awesome features. they are however a little expensive for what you get..

Cavalier = J-Body
Cobalt = Delta Body
Nuff said.

..............Because this thread already makes no sense at all, I will post a picture of Wicket to add to the confusion.
heres the bottom line:
similar.....yes
the same?....no!
they got rid of a lot of the problems that plauged the cavalier throughout the years when they re-invented it by comming out with the cobalt. but there are a lot of big differences between the 2 cars!

Yea, the body and interior . . .
Same engine as the 03-05 Cavalier, same trans as the 03-05, same suspension, same frame (if I'm right) . .
Main difference with the Cobalt is the body and the interior appearence. Other then that, it still has the same damn problems and service issues as the Cavalier.
thats odd, i always thought it was the same as the mustang

The frame is not the same... hence the name "delta body"... plus I'm pretty sure the suspension is different also.

Correct.
Yes, they changed the platform name, but in the end they are basically the same, just updated. Think like this, the change from the Cav to Cobalt is like the 1994 Cavalier to the 1995 Cavalier. GM's marketing department figured if we change the name, people will think it is new and totally different. Reading responses here, GM marketing achieved their goal.
BTW did you all know the Cobalts chassis has been out all over the world since 1991 and it is a derivative of the J or should I say the J-platform was the starting point... . Hence the similarity.

i stand by my mustang theory
Suspension is similar but not the same, the cobalt has irs if I'm not mistaken, as well as not having full rear sturt towers, similar to that of the 2nd gen cav's. The cobalts are also more "roomy" than the cav. To me it's a completely different car. The fuel delivery is different, cav's have a return line and the cobalts are returnless fuel systems, and explain this... If they are so "alike" how come you can't tune a L61 cobalt w/ hpt, but you can tune the LSJ and LE5 cobalts no problem?
They are different cars, not like the sunfire and cavalier are different, or even the C4 and C5, they are completely different, like the Cav and the Grand Am, that would be the best comparison. Lots of "similar" parts but completely different frames and structure.

Very well said....
however the cobalt has a solid rear axle...

Um... no.
First, Cobalts no IRS. Yes, the suspension set-up is similar to the 2nd gen Cav, and old N-body. Cobalts are NOT "more roomy" then the Cavs, EPA classify the the coupe as a sub-compact, the sedan just barely made it to compact... they have less interior volume, not to mention less wheelbase too. And just because to you it is a compeletly different car because of fuel systems and tuning computers (?) does not mean totally different... who the hell judges platforms like that any way?
Also you do realize that the Grand-Am's structure is an elongated J-platform right?
