Classified fraud?
Sunday, November 05, 2006 11:29 AM
I got this email for some parts in the classified section I have for sale. I was about to send a reply when I checked to see if this person is a member. Not only are they not a member but the wording sounded strange. Almost like it was a scripted response to classifieds or something. They didn't offer a larger amount than I'm asking as I just put best offer. Does this look like the beginning of a scammer at work here? If this is we need to make it only possible for members to buy and sell in the classified maybe, keep out the trolls.

Hello,
Am interested in the immediate purchase of the
item you have placed for sale,i will like to ask the
following questions:
1)what is the final asking price?
2)is the price firm atall?
3)what is the condition of the item?
4)do you accept cashiers check as the means of
payment?
Kindly get back to me with your full contact name
and address including phone numberAnd your EMAIL
ADDRESS in which the payment will be sent to as am

Has the makings of a scam e-mail... but as you mentioned, its different than the rest of 'em.

Possibly set it up to login to view classified ads? Might curb some of the fraudulent e-mails...

If scammers could just learn to speak english, they would probably have more success.

Well there may be some Jays on here. Some would say a little too many Jays. It is true Jays can be very threatening especially in groups. I may not have been the first Jay in here but I was the first Jay as far as I can tell.....Dec 24,1976....that gives me almost 30 years experience of being a Jay. Needless to say I am the senior Jay so therefore I have rank over all Jays in here.

How to spot fraud. None of these individually indicate fraudulent activity. Several usually indicate something fishy is going on.

Hello, <-- Notice no name, just a generic greeting.
Am interested in the immediate purchase of the <-- Time Frame Indicator
item you have placed for sale,i will like to ask the
following questions: <-- Terrible engrish, looks like a translator
1)what is the final asking price? <-- Fact that should have been obvious and Time Frame Indicator
2)is the price firm atall?
3)what is the condition of the item?
4)do you accept cashiers check as the means of
payment? <-- Asking about odd payment methods*
Kindly get back to me with your full contact name <-- Nobody says "Kindly" except scammers
and address including phone numberAnd your EMAIL
ADDRESS in which the payment will be sent to as am <--Unnecessary and strange capitalization
ready to purchase it at. <-- Again, Time Frame Indicator

*I highly recommend PayPal for buying anything online, and only accepting from address verified buyers unless you have good reason to do otherwise. Personal check is also somewhat safe, in that at least you know who they are, and where they are supposed to keep their money. The police are also much more helpful for bad checks than bad money orders/cashiers checks.
