Purchase of 97 Sunfire

Hello to everyone. I was just looking to get some personal opinions on an offer being made to me by my spouses dad. Its an 97 white sunfire GT. Its and automatic and the mechanic says that something in the transmission is making the check engine light come on and there is also a freon leek so the air condition does not work. The hood needs replaced due to a deer accident. I don't know the millage but he is only asking $600 for the car. Should I take him up on it. I mean it is a good deal. I just need to here that it is worth it. I currently own a 92 cavi convertible and doing the 3400 swap but need a second car to drive and eventually fix up. So your opinions, should I buy it?

You're prolly looking at 1500 for the tranny to be rebuilt, 600 for a new working AC and a stock hood might cost you 200.

Before doing this I'd look at the miles and go from there. You can go without the AC if you must, the tranny might become problematic and make the car unreliable (example, it won't get out of first gear one morning when you need to go to work. ) and the hood is no problem, you can pick up a junkyard hood for cheaper than 200 for that matter.
