1988 Buick Skyhawk

About This Vehicle:

Bought from another mechanic for $400.00 including the Kenwood CD player. Put shocks and struts and tires on it to keep it going as a daily driver. Stopped all the leaks upper and lower, gets 37 MPG highway @ just under 70 MPH; gets about 28-29 MPG in town all on 93 pump gas (yes I keep it tuned pretty well). Have a long block I got for $300.00 (a good one, not a cheapo with blast beads left in the cylinders- seen plenty of these other crappy rebuilds)> She is now at 198,000 original miles and has low bottom end oil pressure after 20-30 min of highway driving, so time to plant a new mill under the hood. Also have put her in the body shop to strip it to bare metal and repaint the original factory color. See my pics. This car was good to me at a time when I needed it, so returning the favor seems right. Plus, these are pretty cool old cars that not many people have anymore...

MODIFICATIONS

Engine:
  • 2.0l 121CID OHC VIN Code K
  • bone stock.
Suspension/Wheels/Brakes:
  • Cheap American Racing 13" replacements for the original steel w/ center caps and chrome trim rings (destroyed when my buddy's wife backed into the left door with her van and dragged it about 6 feet against the curb. I coulda killed her... New rims are 14" from a 1987 Skylark (nice aluminum with tri-shield logo center caps). No spring or strut mods.
Interior:
  • Original carpet pan was trashed
  • covered it with Wal-Mart carpet rolls (turned out nice
  • but a temporary solution. New carpet pan and factory correct mats on the way. Headliner is gone (wish I at least had the board
  • that'd make it only about $120.00 to redo it including the sunvisors. 3rd brake light guts rebuilt by my own hands. Redid all steering column- routed switches and scrubbed and repainted column bowl
  • had new keys made from the numbers on the originals.
Exterior:
  • One white door (left) from an '87 Sunbird
  • rusted roof
  • hood and rear deck lid (now at my buddy's body shop getting the full 'bare metal' spa treatment- 3 grand paint job
  • substantially discounted
  • of course).
Audio:
  • Kenwood single CD/ AM/FM cheapo
  • front speakers crackle
  • so I fade it to the rear enough to eliminate that while I listen. With all the work on this car
  • the radio will be the last item to put in; probably will find an '88 Fiero Radio and put a converter pigtail on the back to have MP3 player input. new speakers
  • maybe amp & crossover in the 180 watt range
  • not gonna be a radio car...
