ouch! that will definitely have to be cut out and a new piece welded in......... as far as price goes, I really can't help u with that...
I live in the desert, you can have a 10yr old car without any rust in it at all! (if it was bought new here, and stayed here)
dry weather FTW!
Yep that metal is definately going to have to be cut out and replaced... if you don't want it to spread any further or get any worse. Is it just on that one side? That seems like an odd place for rust on a Cav... maybe I've just never seen any rust in that area. Looks like moisture got trapped behind the quarter and ate its way from the inside out.
Best bet is to just take it around and get some estimates... replacing that metal/panel is the only way to keep it from getting any worse (don't listen to anyone who says you can just grind it out and fill it with fiberglass or treat it with a rust killer/preventative... won't work).
thanks guys its only on that one side it just pisses me off cause now my car looks like crap with that i wanted to mod it a lil farther but i dont think its worth it now with rust
my cav had rust in that spot too... pissed me off so much that i just bought a new cav with no rust. sorry that probably doesnt help at all.
Check out my build thread!
well im not buying a new car my car only has 80 k with no problems
hmm well I have an idea, not the greates idea, but it could work....
of ur not planning on reselling it, and plan on keeping it forever. you can always cut the piece with the rust off, make sure it's all off, no rust is left. repaint around the area just to prevent it from rusting again.... then install some type J sideskirts, or Drift!
I know this is more like covering the problem, but if u can make sure it wont keep rusting after cutting thje piece out, this seems to be the easiest choice, plus you get a mod!
oh my god!!!
nikki was right the only correct way is to cut the rust out, replace it with new metal, allot more process is invovled not going to get into it right now, now metal fab experience dont try this at home kidies
let a shop do it
can i haz bondo
After it's fixed, look at the pinch weld and make sure that the drain holes are not pinched shut. Could be the reason you have rust there.
yeah cut it out new peice and some filler ur set. yet paint is just as bad u have a really old paint i assume 95-99 so the paint is really faded buy the sun and new paint would stick out pretty good even with a good painted new verse old. the quarter gets painted and this should blend into the door jamb and rocker and up the quarter. maybe a gooooood buff afterwards my not look half bad. but yeah rust gotta go just catch it now before u lose more cavy.
Had it on my black 97 z just cut it out and fiber glassed it haven't had any problems.

Are you saying you just cut the metal out and instead of replacing the metal fiberglassed it instead???
btw... not a good idea. Temporary cheaper fix... yes... permanent fix... no.
ive got that on mine right now... same place. excepts its bigger. ive ground off most the rust and killed the rust with permatex. going either tonight or tomorrow and getting a fiberglass patch kit. ive heard great things about fiberglass patch kit. but its just like anything else its all in your prep work....
btw does anyone sell patch panels for cavs. if i had a patch panel i would have no problems welding it in... i mean having it welded in.
also whats the best way to weld the patch ? tig mig? i have a cousin that going to school for welding so im pretty sure he could weld it in.
all i need is the patch placed i can do the rest....
i don't think the weld is going to matter that much because your going to grind it all anyways. In my class we use mig with really really low heat settings. It is really easy to burn thru on body panels. Also, make sure your cousin doesn't just throw a big ass bead on there. its going to warp the panel and make a lot more work for you. try to do little spot welds in alternating spots until you have it all the way around. that should reduce the chances of deforming the surrounding area.
man in the same area as I got my rust problem.

heres an update on this went to a body shop and got a price to fix the rust . $400 .00 to cut out replace and paint .now im thinking should i save some money and cut the rust out my self and cover it up with some type of side skirts ?? if i did do that is there any type of side skirt that will cover it up and still match the z bumpers ? what you guys think i should do
go to regional forum and see in anyone in ur aera can help.. may cut down the price a bit.. dif should not just cut it out and then toss a fiberglass side over it... worse case senario have the shop do the work then not paint it.. see what the cost would be then just toss some primer on there til u get a kit idea figured out.
hence u see a gold hood on my car atm.. and i am looking for a driver and passenger door cause both mine are rusted through.

$400 to do that is not unreasonable at all. Don't cut corners on rust, it'll bite you in the a$$ later. Just get the $400 and let the shop do it. Covering it up or "cutting it out" won't help it
thats what i was thinking, ok so think about this you cut the rust out and leave a big ass hole in the 1/4 but you think covering up the hole with a aftermarket rocker mmolding is going to help the problem???
400 bucks is dirt cheap for rust work do it like that , and to the person that asked about patch panles well did y a ever hear of metal fabrication?? you would have to make the patch panle your self
let the shop do it
