Infamous Type-j rear bumper wave.. Fix?
Tuesday, June 06, 2006 3:56 PM
OK i tried since 2pm today to try and get this thing on my car without it doing the wave effect, i'd played around with every idea i could come up with without using brackets or something of the such yet....Support one from the bottom won't help since these are all buldgeing upwards and need to be somehow forced back down... here are some pics.

At this point in time i am OPEN for any and all suggestions to help me with this becuase i have nooo freaking clue how to cure this.

wow, that's pretty bad...instead of forcing that piece down...force the rest up using some sort of spacer...

move the sides out as far as you can, and put a l bracket under it. drill some holes and put those black plastic push clips in. it helps a lot.

yeh the bumper looks like it needs to come up some more.. can u push on teh wave and make it go downward? just try and make it as high as possible that looks good(not as much gap between filer plates) then find out where to mount the Lbracket and do that way..

When i push the wave down, the space under the filler plate goes away...and the sides of the kit are lined up perfectly with the 1/4 pannels, so i just got back from the homedepot and i came up with a killer idea...

I found the widest piece of aluminium that they carried 2" wide.. I am going to cut it to follow the contour of the corner edge of the body kit and then i got a thinner piece of aluminium and i am going to sandwich the whole freaking thing together so it cannot possibly wave or do whatever its problem is right now. After that I am going to polish it to look like billet aluminium. After that if there is still a gap between the filler plates, i have 10 L-brackets and plenty of left over scrap aluminium to take care of that problem. If i don't like the polished look with the screws flush into the metal, i will fust paint it when the kit gets done. But this is the best idea i can come up with for now.

if you're going to do that, get the alum anodized to match the kit

i dunno about having a visible peice of aluminum.. are u bascially making a trim peice where it will only be like a inch wide if that? Like itll slide into the curve of the trunk? if so u might have problems of ur trunk rubbing it when u close it.. Also i dont think it would look to good.. id say just do the Lbrackets.. if u have to do the aluminum thing.. just paint it body color..

Well i am going to try and and remove the bumper again and see if i can pull the edges out a little bit more and maybe that will take care of the problem. ALso going to put a few L-brackets under the filler plates. We'll see what comes of it all.. Because trying to cut the piece of aluminium is a real chore... My dremel dosn't like it very much.. lol..

Who would have thought 2 L-brackets under the filler plates per side would cure the problem... ha ha...

pics were off my cam phone...

Now i can go return the $40 bucks in Aluminium i have sitting in the back of my Cruiser and put it towards better use, like some 3M double sided tape for the side skirts... ha ha..

Right under the filler plates there are 2 nuts holding them onto the car, i took 2 -2" stanley zinc plated L-brackets, cut the lower portion in half so there was only the top hole then drilled the hole out larger its going to have to be larger than the bolt you slide them onto because the nut you remove has a washer attached to it and needs a little more clearance. Reinstall with nuts with the brackets behind and tighen... it caused the type-j to actually lock in place under the filler plate for me. I don't have any pics of it either, so i hope that helped, I don't want to remove the rear bumper again now that is on there perfect... lol.. sorry man.
