hey i am sure most of you got that bubbling effect on the window trim .. its pissing me off .. anyone know where you can get replacements for those? and how much are they.. cause most cars at the yards have those bubbles too
Well my friend I had the same problem a few years back with the bubbling under the moldings and I got replacement ones from GM. Not sure of the cost though. Thats the only thing I can tell ya

you could always tape them off sand them and respray them with a rubber coat. i did that on my last car and it looked as good as new.
but sorry i dont know where to get new ones
Has anyone had any luck sanding them down and repainting them on a Sunfire? The Sunfire coupes have the glossy ones instead of the matte ones that the Cavs have and they look like absolute garbage after only 2-3 years.
I'm on my second set now. I might buy new ones and then try sanding these ones down but I seem to recall them being around $80 each or something retarded at the dealer.
Why doesn't someone make so CF replacements so that the color doesn't fade??

Next week or two I'll be glassing either complete replacement's or a new skin for the existing, both which will have to painted. I get let anybody interested, know how it's working out, and if all goes well I'll make a mold.
are u talking about the door pillar things? if so, mine are painted, and I have not had any problem with chipping. theyve been painted twice already, theyve been painted for about 2 yrs already, since my car was orange
No I think we're tlking about the exterior will sill, I've yet to see that hasn't bubbled and corrided, I've had 2 sets in the 3 years I've owned the car. Hoping to get fiberglas replacements tis weekend, if not then I will start them next week.
Can someone clarify what we are referring to?

They're called belt moldings. They're the things at the base of the outside of the window on the door. Long strip that runs from under the mirror to the trailing edge of the door.
The problem with just making a CF replacement or something is that it's got a rubber backing and the weatherstripping attached to it so it's not as simple as just making a CF or fibreglass strip.
I'm interested in seeing how Jim's pieces come out.
Still curious though as to whether anyone's sanded down a set to just repaint them.
I'd love to find the factory that makes them and burn the place down. Seriously... 15 years the damned cars were in production and they couldn't fix this???
well it seems that its the METAL inside the rubber that gets RUSTED and starts bubbling.. so i think no matter how much you sand if there is rust inside its just going to keep bubbling.
i was going to repaint them just so they look fresh and clean .. i was going to use vinyl paint. anyone have better suggestions?
I had to get a new "belt molding" from the dealer it cost me $70.

My painter has told me that sanding them down and repainting will not work, although they will look fresh, it won't last long. Apparently something to do with the oxidation that is already taking place in the metal. He told me it was just a waste of my money. If anybody has tried it, I'd be curious to know how long it's lasted.
Wow... wonder if someone could get them made in Stanless or aluminum...then you wouldn't have the Oxidation factor and they'd look great clear coated or painted.

I wax all the trim every time I wax the rest of the car and it has helped the trim stay nice and shiny. I also wax the mirrors, door handles and door pillars to keep them looking new until I get them painted.
We're not talking about all the other trim and stuff. Only that specific piece along the bottom outside of the coupe door windows.
I picked up belt moulding's this afternoon from the wreckers, starting Friday I'll be making the molds for both sides, by next weekend I should the 1st test pair layed-up, as long as the fitment is good, I'll have them painted and reattached the weather stripping's. I'll post pics as soon as they are complete.
Is this what you guys are talking about? If so I would love to find something that will fix this problem...Mine are looking real bad this year...
I'm curious is if that piece would be swapable from a cavalier to a Sunfire and more specifically a Sunfire vert? One of my friends bent the end that's circled ^^^ back somehow and I tried to fix it but I'm better off getting a new one that I can screw in like it should be. Mine haven't bubbled though, but different parts of the country means different weather and problems.

You wouldn't want to swap them between a Sunfire and Cavalier coupe because they wouldn't match the rest of the trim. The Sunfire has glossy trim while the Cavalier has flat black.
I have no idea if the verts use the same piece or not.
Wild Weasel's correct about the difference in finish between the 2 cars, although they are interchangable. Also the ones from the verts are the same as the fires, and look just as bad. I picked thru some 30 fires and cav's at the wreckers yesterday and didn't find one piece on any fire that any better, they are all SH#T!
I should a new fiberglass replacement within 2 weeks...
Have you sanded any down yet? Can they be sanded and painted or are they just rusted to garbage under the paint?
you know whats really weird, my cavalier is 11 years old and still has the original trim piece, and it looks really good still, hehe
