alright so I decided to try out a new idea with my flush door handle idea... here's the original thread:
Flush door handles take 1
so I decided to finally try the grand prix/ malibu/ C5/ whatever else they put them on handles since i was bored
I'll let the pics speak for themselves
the only problem is the handles are flat and the door is curved so there's a slight gap underneath them
I'm sure a heat gun would fix it
the only other problem is the rod in the door is a bit too short to reach the grand prix handles tab I'm going to try to bend it so it'll fit but if that won't work, i'll have to weld a rod onto the one already in the door to lengthen it about 3 inches or so
also i'm still a little bit iffy about it resting on top of the door skin, i might try something with cutting out a perfect outline to the handle, then welding a plate under the door for them to mount to so they sit truly flush with the door
let me know what you guys think
Looks good peej , the hardwork is going to pay off.
.
nice! I like it! hopefully you get everything together and if you need any help on the eco swap let me know I'd love to help you out!

looks good pj. your car is about to come together
slowly but surely...
No one remembers simonc/spydarfire's sunfire? Don't know if it's been mentioned, didn't read all the posts in the other thread.

it looks like he has the same thing
any info?
I believe he used handles off the rear doors of a 4dr neon.. not sure if they're the same as front doors. That's all I remember, if you have any specific questions I could ask him.

just a lil curious as to how he got them to sit perfectly flush with the door skin thats all
Yeh they look like the rear door handles off a neon.

I'm interested in thing as well, i used to look at the grand am ones but then talking to rob weis he told me about this post and thanks pj. Makes it alot easier for me lmao.
Joyride, ask him but im pretty sure they are neon rear handles as well. You should have him come on here and do a brief how-to for PJ and then PJ can do it with pics and enlighten us all!
Hey.. sorry, don't get much time to check this forum any longer.. and for those of you who know me, know I sold the car off.
The way I got them in so flush was as follows:
1. Go to junk yard, take the rear doors off of a 95 Dodge neon.
2. Cut about 12" wide, by 6" high out of the door (around the handle obviously)
3. Cut a 12" x 6" hole in the door of the sunfire
4. Using your choice of materials, sink it in flush and weld where possible, using filler when necessary to keep the curves and welds hidden
5. inside door, hook up the locks to the handle (easy to do)
6. finish off the outside of the door
7. Paint it all!
Here are some pics:
SORRY FOR THE VARIED SIZES AND RANDOM ORDER - THIS WAS A QUICK CUT UP!!!
Hope that helps!
(and yes the neon I took em off was RED!

Looks good PJ.....Much better fit then the previous ones.........
I put you on my buddy list to IM you about those handles and forgot, lol. I definately like those a lot better! I wanted to do this swap for a long time now. That is a lot of work to do it like Simon did!

Sorry to bring this post from it's slumber but I have a question.
Earlier this morning at work, I was parked to an older Saturn sedan ('90s model, don't know the exact name of it). Out of curiosity I checked out the door handles on the Saturn and they looked to be the same size at the handles on the Cavalier and have the same contour. They looked as if they sit flush on the door handle (well more flush than they do on the Cavalier/Sunfire), I'm wondering if these handles from the mid to late '90s Saturn vehicles would be good for a flush door handle swap. It looks like the J's and early 90 Saturn model share some of the same components so I'm wondering if this would be a better/easier swap for those looking to do this than using Grand Prix handles or Neon handles.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
I'm not exactly sure but I did notice that as well
if you can get access to a saturn check them out pretty closely and you might be able to figure it out
i got a lot of strange looks in parking lots when I was looking at grand prix door handles. Its best if you have a buddy or a relative with the car so you can get a really close look
