GM's next RWD platform
Friday, March 23, 2007 12:55 PM
GM is set to debut a new small-to-medium-size vehicle platform, called Alpha. The new vehicle platform will use pieces of Kappa (Pontiac Solstice) and Zeta (Pontiac G8), creating a rear-wheel drive architecture that will play a large part in the future of Pontiac and Cadillac.
Pontiac’s next G6 is set to go rear-wheel drive and will be the first to use the platform. GM’s Resident Car Czar, Bob Lutz, has said in public and private that he’d like to position the Pontiac brand as the company’s American answer to BMW, but with a more expressive and sexy design language. Along with this goal would be to migrate the entire platform to rear-wheel drive. This translates into less trucks and SUVs and more sport sedans, coupes, and sporty crossovers.

Cadillac, with the introduction of the CTS (Sigma platform, also RWD), will use Alpha as well in Europe. However, this won’t change the company’s plans for its CTS the new car rides on an improved but similar version of the Sigma platform. Rather, Cadillac will create a new, smaller car on the Alpha platform. In Europe, this car will be the replacement for the BLS (currently built on the same FWD Epsilon platform as the Saab 9-3). But will it come to America? Hmmmm

I'll keep you posted.

I'd love to have a Firebird TA if they ever brought that back.... but I'm sure I would not be able to afford it, lol... And the G6 still isn't cheap and I still think last Sunfires looked better than the G6s...

G6 undercuts all of its competition in price, so image how much the others cost.

There will not be a firebird again for a while if what Bob Lutz said holds true.

It would be a nice touch if GM relives the name Ventura and Astre again, but with these new "G-x" designation, I highly doubt it will happen.

man i like where there going with pontiac, focused on sporty cars, sedans, and crossovers just as promised.

i really think pontiac, saturn, and caddilac have all made major turns for the better.

chevy's lineup is still lacking, we will see what the new impala and malibu can bring.

UAW officials disclosed General Motors’ plans to produce a small rear-wheel-drive vehicle architecture code-named Alpha. UAW publicized GM’s pledge to invest in future vehicles for 16 assembly plants: a pledge the union won this week during its contract negotiations with GM. GM will build two body styles of the new Alpha vehicle, which will begin production in 2011. GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio, will assemble it.
It is in the compact area but bigger than the Gamma. It’s more like a small entry-level vehicle that would be more luxury-inclined, like a BMW used to be. GM executives have previously said that Pontiac would be the brand of choice for “affordable” rear-wheel-drive cars, but nothing is concrete. News of the Alpha along with other extensive details about GM’s product plans were included in the UAW’s contract highlights. The union will distribute the highlights to its members this week in advance of the contract ratification vote.
Looks like Alpha will be direct competition to this. All in all promising.

Thread.

^^^ that would be sweet. I may finally begin to like GM more.
I thought they were gonna keep the G6 a FWD car and offer another model, a little bigger (maybe G7?) with RWD. that was the last I heard.
