2008 Infinity G37
Wednesday, March 21, 2007 6:03 PM

Horsepower has jumped from 293 (SAE certified) to an estimated 330, considering that Infiniti didn’t resort to blowers or D-I to achieve such results. The torque curve of the new 3.7 is flatter and the peak of 270 lb-ft is 12 lb-ft higher. Like the enhanced 3.5-liter VQ V-6 in the '07 350Z, (which, incidentally, produces only 306 hp) the G37 Coupe’s new powerplant is almost completely new, and, like the Z’s new motor, adopts yet another acronym: VQ37VHR VVEL, the latter four characters standing for Variable Valve Event and Lift. That's the important bit, as this is Nissan's first application of this technology that, similar to BMW's Valvetronic, controls engine breathing more efficiently by altering valve lift and timing without the use of a traditional throttle plate.
Once again, manual and automatic transmissions will be offered, and numerous chassis enhancements were made in hopes of raising handling and braking capabilities to the top of the class. Available technologies include an active four-wheel steering system.
Electronic goodies include a touch-screen navigation system with XM NavTraffic real-time traffic monitoring, a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive, a rearview monitor, and an 11-speaker Bose audio system with next-generation sound processing.

Sounds expensive.

Doesnt seem like that much of a power gain for being a larger motor and having the vvel.
Also, it kind of looks like a toyota/lexus product.
I am not a big fan of the side or front view.

It looks good from the rear tho.

hmmm, very sexy car...bump it to 400 hp, and make the price reasonable, and it may cross my mind to ditch the goat.

I still don't like the front so much. Or the taillights. But if it's anything like the old G35 Coupe, it doesn't matter what it looks like, because it is so amazing to drive.

Not that much power gain? 24 more ponies for 0.2L increase not good enough for you?
Hell... give Nissan tremendous credit for achieving 306HP on a 3.5L with out forced induction or Direct Injection. GM, Ford, Chrysler, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, etc could only dream of achieving these numbers with out the technologies just mentioned. GM's 3.6L needs D-I to achieve 300HP, Toyota needs D-I and Port Fuel Injection to achieve 300+HP, BMW needs Turbo and 2 of them to get 300HP.
And being 3.7L on V6 with a EST 330HP, hell that is V8 territory, GM needs a 4.6L and 8 cylinders to achieve 320HP.
Lets not forget how stout these VQ engines are too.
No wonder the VQ has won so many awards.

Ok i didn't say for the size its not impressive. I said for the amount of dispacement increase and added tech, that is not much of a gain.
Hell even the LS2 gained 50hp from only .3L w/o a variable cam phase technology.

I think anybody could do it, but nobody does. GM squeezed 180 HP out of a Quad 4 back in the early 90's. That was extremely rare back then with smog laws and such.

You are right, i'm not doubting that. But it's not like 300 HP out of a 3.7 is extreme or anything.

306 out of 3.5 330 out of 3.7

if anybody could do it, why dont they?

Well lets see: cost factors, reliability factors, don't have the need to do it.
If I make a 400hp v8 for my sports cars why would I care about a 330hp v6?
They both have their good and bad points and each has a market they cater to.

Makes more sense.
Good point on the LS2, but you're also working on two extra cylinders too.

Ahh yes, the all mighty Quads.
Lets not forget that in 1993 the 4.6L Northstar made 290HP, impressive especially for a American product. And we can thank the Quad-4 for that for some shared technologies.

Would it matter if there are more cylinders? You would thing as far as hp goes dispacement is displacement. Tq on the other hand would be more affected by the extra cylinders.

Kind of funny you point out the northstar making 290hp w/ a 4.6 and ford is just now getting 300 out of one(I know the mach 1 had 305ish but still more than 10 years later).

Styling: Not bad, but it's not my cup of tea... I still like the 03-05 styling, hands down.
Power: Not bad, but if there's no possibility of using something other than 91, I don't think it'll make its way into my buy list.
Driving: hell if I know... I love the current G's

From what I've read the 350Z will not become a 370. It will continue on with the improved HP G35 3.5VQ. Trust me the 350Z's nearly 300hp is enough. It's probably one the best balanced cars out there for the money, if not the best.
