General Motors Unleashes "Autotainmen" On Las Vegas Scene

GM to Open Unprecedented "The Drive" Facility Offering Performance & Off-Road Driving Experiences in Spring of 2006; GM also Becomes a Marketing & Advertising Partner of the Las Vegas Monorail Company

LAS VEGAS – With tons of dirt and a dose of speed, the corner of Paradise Road and Sahara Avenue will be transformed in spring of 2006 when General Motors opens the doors of "The Drive," a unique hands-on driving experience that will be the first of its kind within the United States.

Featuring two professionally-designed driving courses – including a high performance loop and an off-road adventure over a dirt terrain – The Drive will provide a unique "autotainment" experience adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip. The land to be utilized for the facility will be leased by General Motors from the Sahara Hotel & Casino. For the duration of the project, GM will also be a marketing and advertising partner of the Las Vegas Monorail Company including having the only brand presence at the monorail station at the Sahara Hotel & Casino – currently the most northern point of the Las Vegas Monorail system.

"The Drive provides a unique platform for General Motors to showcase its vehicles in an unprecedented way," said Steve Tihanyi, general director, marketing and entertainment alliances for General Motors. "With two fun-filled courses, consumers will be able to enjoy one-of-a-kind driving experiences in a variety of our products without any pressure to buy."

The performance course will feature a half-mile paved route with jogs and turns complete with chicanes to enjoy both the speed and handling control of pure sports car driving thrills. Vehicle choices to be unleashed on the Performance course will include: the legendary Chevy Corvette; the Pontiac GTO, the 400-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V; the Pontiac Solstice, a roadster exhibiting thrilling Pontiac performance; the luxurious and powerful Cadillac STS-V; and the impressive Saab 9-3 convertible.

“Guests of the Sahara Hotel & Casino and fans of NASCAR will now have the opportunity to actually feel the thrill of putting the pedal to the metal just steps from our hotel and casino,” said John F. Morocco, director of operations for the Sahara Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. “The partnership with General Motors offers our guests a new thrilling attraction unlike any other near The Strip.”

Keys to the rugged yet refined HUMMER H2 and mid-size HUMMER H3 will be available to consumers looking to navigate the adventurous off-road course encompassing a tunnel, hill climb, v-ditch and sloped banks, moguls and obstacles. The off-road trail is available to test out the Chevy Silverado Diesel, and once available, the redesigned 2007 models of the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon Denali, Cadillac Escalade and Chevy Suburban. Select large SUVs will be E85 fuel compatible as well.

“This commitment from GM and the Sahara shows that the monorail is more than transit system, it is rapidly becoming an icon level attraction of the most-visited city in the world,” said Curtis Myles III, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Monorail Company. “While The Drive at the Sahara monorail station exemplifies the experiential marketing environment of the monorail’s advertising program, we also believe the project will create incremental ridership and revenue. We’re proud to welcome General Motors to Las Vegas and we’re looking forward to building a long-lasting marketing partnership with them and the Sahara on this incredible journey.”

With the addition of General Motors, the monorail expands its high-profile advertiser portfolio to six along with Sprint/Nextel, Hansen’s Beverage Company, Paramount Parks, BankWest of Nevada, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The Drive, which will encompass 11 acres at the corner of Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road, will be open for a minimum six-month period. The Drive will utilize a variety of local vendors for the build phase, and will hire approximately 100 locals to help with operations once the project opens.

The Drive hours of operation (once open) are preliminarily set to be 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays. The Drive is accessible from the GM Monorail station at the Sahara Hotel & Casino, and parking is available at the hotel’s self parking structure or valet.

Pricing and ticket locations for the driving experiences at The Drive will be announced at a later date. Drivers must be age 18 or over, and present a valid driver’s license. Professional drivers (as passengers) will accompany each driver to help them get the most out of their driving experience. For the safety of all guests, on-site breathalyzer tests will be part of the mandatory registration process before guests can enjoy The Drive experience.

For those wanting to watch, The Drive will feature special viewing locations to capture pictures and witness drivers navigating the courses offered.

“The Drive” Vehicles

Upon opening The Drive, General Motors will present 15 vehicle options (subject to change) from six of GM’s nameplates, including Chevrolet, Pontiac, GMC, HUMMER, Saab and Cadillac. The Performance course will offer seven vehicles, including hardtops and convertibles. The Off Road trail will present three HUMMER models, the Chevy Silverado Diesel and four 2007 model full-size SUVs. Following is a brief description of The Drive’s anticipated vehicle portfolio.

PERFORMANCE :

2006 CADILLAC CTS-V: The CTS-V provides high-performance driving enthusiasts with a serious, credible alternative to imports in the highly competitive, low-volume luxury performance segment. The CTS-V was refined and validated at Germany 's famed Nurburgring racetrack to meet the expectations of the world's most avid driving enthusiasts. An impressive 6.0L V-8 LS2 engine produces 400 horsepower, along with smooth, quiet operation and outstanding reliability, durability and quality.

2006 CADILLAC STS-V: The 4.4-liter supercharged Northstar engine in the STS-V generates 469 horsepower and is Cadillac's most powerful production engine to date. The STS-V carries the craftsmanship and sophistication of its STS sibling, but at an entirely different level. Designed for everyday driving, the STS-V delivers supercharged, rear-drive performance with an elegant design statement that is unmistakably Cadillac.

2006 CHEVY CORVETTE: The 6 th generation Corvette coupe and convertible offer more power, more passion and more precision than any other Corvette in history. The new 400 horsepower Corvette is the fastest production Corvette ever with a top speed of 186 mph and a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds. The vehicle offers a refined interior with innovative Keyless Access with Push Button Start. An optional six-speed paddle shift automatic transmission offers a sophisticated, electronically controlled transmission that gives the driver the choice of thee transmission modes – Drive, Sport and Paddle Shift.

2006 CHEVY SSR: While SSR’s dramatic exterior shape may recall the full-fendered forms of the late ’40s and early ’50s, this innovative roadster incorporates leading-edge technology and creative design solutions. One of SSR’s most distinguishing features is its power-retractable hardtop, which provides an open-air driving experience in less than 30 seconds without sacrificing cargo space. SSR’s retractable hardtop is the first ever applied on a pickup, and the roof panels move independently, stacking vertically behind the passenger compartment. Under the hood, the SSR sports an LS2 6.0L V-8 producing 400 horsepower with six-speed manual transmission.

2006 PONTIAC GTO: GTO – the original muscle car – was re-introduced in 2004 and does not disappoint with the 2006 version. Under the hood, the GTO boasts an LS2 6.0L V-8 pumping 400 horsepower that overpowers everything in its class and propels 0-60 mph in under five seconds. The current GTO is a contemporary performer whose traits include impressive cornering capabilities, a smooth ride and extraordinary comfort. Behind the wheel, all of the muscle of the GTO is tempered with the refinement of its premium interior – from its color-keyed all-leather performance seating to its integrated driver information center.

2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE: Inspired by the pure driving experience offered by classic roadsters, the Solstice delivers invigorating driving thrills with balanced performance from a sophisticated, Ecotec-based powertrain and delivers them in a curvaceous form that can be best described as seductive. True sports car features include rear-wheel drive, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, a powerful 2.4L engine rated at 177 horsepower, and a unique body structure that was designed for responsive handling. A driver-oriented cockpit interior features motorcycle-inspired instruments, and an easy-to-operate folding top stows neatly behind the seats for an open-air ride.

2006 SAAB 9-3: The Saab 9-3 Aero convertible features a 2.8L V-6 Turbo engine and a choice of six-speed or automatic transmissions that rides on five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels. Built from “the driver outward,” the cabin’s ergonomics, instrumentation, controls and seating position are all developed from the driver’s perspective for enhanced levels of comfort and safety. With a steeply raked windshield, wedge-like profile and short front and rear overhangs, the 9-3 model conveys a sense of movement even while standing still. Simply defined, the vehicle is a premium convertible with a level of structural integrity, build quality and driving refinement that positions it at the top of its class.

OFF-ROAD :

2006 CHEVY SILVERADO DIESEL: The Chevy Silverado stands its ground as the best-selling vehicle for General Motors. The diesel version (on heavy-duty models) features a Duramax Diesel 6600 V-8 that is enhanced in 2006 for a smoother, more refined performance with emissions reduction. [?Diesel or diesel engine on Silverado heavy duty model] When mated to an all-new Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission, the truck will deliver more horsepower (360 hp at 3200 rpm) and 650 lb-ft torque.

2006 HUMMER H2: The H2 is instantly recognizable as belonging to a highly exclusive brand at the top of its class in off-road performance. It is a bold and youthful interpretation of what HUMMER means, in a more civilized package. The H2 is capable of traveling through streams 20 inches deep, climbing 16-inch steps and rocks, paddling through deep sand and outdistancing competitors in high-speed desert runs. H2 power is derived from a Vortec 6000 6.0L V-8 that generates 316 horsepower and is mated to a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4L65-E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission.

2006 HUMMER H2 SUT: The H2 SUT is an H2 at heart, but also has a fun side. With the push of a few buttons, the driver can open the four side windows, the rear window and the standard sunroof, giving the SUT a truly open-air feeling, like driving a convertible. This variant of H2 offers added functionality and versatility as the passenger and cargo areas can be configured for a variety of needs. When the vehicle needs to carry passengers in the rear seat as a conventional SUV would, the bulkhead (called the Midgate) at the rear of the passenger compartment remains upright, still providing a rear bed with more than 30 cubic feet of cargo space. When more cargo space is desired the rear window can be powered into the Midgate, and the Midgate and rear seat can be folded forward to allow access into expanded four-foot by six-foot pickup bed.

2006 HUMMER H3: The all-new 2006 H3, an authentic HUMMER in a midsize SUV package, comfortably navigates city traffic and delivers HUMMER’s trademark crawling and climbing capability. HUMMER has developed a passionate following because of its unmatched style and capability, and the H3 extends this iconic appeal. Powered by a Vortec 3500 engine, the H3 delivers 220 horsepower, can ford 16 inches of water at 20 mph or 24-inch streams at a 5-mph pace, climb 16 inch vertical steps and rocks, and make its way through deep sand and race over sandy surfaces. In addition to its uncompromised off-road capabilities, the H3 also provides the refinement, comfort and convenience for enjoyable on-road driving with heated leather seats, a large electric sliding sunroof, a DVD-based navigation radio and more.

2007 CADILLAC ESCALADE: Since its inception, the Escalade has been a design icon, and the luxurious vehicle establishes a new level of refinement and style with the 2007 year model. The 2007 Escalade features a new powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems. These integrated systems deliver the most powerful and most efficient luxury SUV in its class, led by a new 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine that delivers 403 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque. At first glance, an all-new distinctive exterior design captures attention, while a myriad of quality features including 22-inch chrome wheels, climate controlled front seats, power fold and tumble second row seats, remote start, power articulating running boards, power liftgate, IntelliBeam headlamps, “new look” grille, and a new radio family are many of the great new features that can be found throughout.

2007 CHEVY SUBURBAN: The all-new 2007 combines advanced fuel-saving technologies and aerodynamic enhancements to provide best-in-class fuel economy. It is capable of hauling more passengers and cargo than any other vehicle in the segment, and features a 360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technology. The Suburban is equipped with an efficient 5.3L V-8 with fuel-saving Active Fuel Management™ technology, delivering 320 horsepower, while a new 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management will be available on 1500 models. A 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing is offered on heavy-duty models. The 5.3L V-8 in the Suburban is capable of running on any combination of conventional gasoline and ethanol (E85), a renewable fuel produced commercially from agricultural crops or forest residues and is an environmentally viable alternative to pure petroleum. The Chevy Suburban also features increased interior refinement.

2007 CHEVY TAHOE: The 2007 model of the Chevy Tahoe is the next generation of the industry’s best-selling full-size SUV. The 2007 Tahoe has been engineered to deliver a smoother, quieter ride, more responsive handling and a more refined interior. The Vortec 5300 V8 engine with Active Fuel Management technology helps balance 320 horsepower with unsurpassed fuel economy (16 city/22 highway) and allows for seamless transition from eight cylinders to four and back again to give Tahoe drivers power they expect. The 5.3L V-8 in the Tahoe is capable of running on any combination of conventional gasoline and ethanol (E85), a renewable fuel produced commercially from agricultural crops or forest residues and is an environmentally viable alternative to pure petroleum.

2007 GMC YUKON DENALI: The all-new 2007 GMC Yukon Denali is distinguished with a more refined interior and sleek, expressive styling that announces a new look for GMC vehicles – styling that conveys GMC’s professional grade qualities. The vehicle offers more power and better fuel economy than the vehicle it replaces, earning GMC’s “more than expected” reputation. A sleeker, taut form with wraparound front and rear fascias, jewel-like headlights, styled mirrors and integrated running boards provides a seamless, contemporary appearance. An elevated performance is discovered with a 6.2L all-aluminum small-block V8 engine and a new six-speed automatic transmission.

If you read the press release above, it said "Pricing and ticket locations for the driving experiences at The Drive will be announced at a later date."

SpecialKid wrote:are they going to build this and only keep it open for six months?

Did you happen to read the word MINIMUM before the words six months? That means they have a contract to keep it open for at least that long. My guess is they will evaluate how it is working out and make a decision following that as to how long they will keep it open. Why would they sign a contract for multiple years if the whole thing ends up being a dud because nobody goes?

Being that this is in Las-Vegas, shouldn't this be in regional forums?

Did they start building this yet? I was just in Vegas and saw no mention of this anywhere near the intersection of Paradise and Sahara. Maybe I wasn't looking good enough.......

You probably don't remember what the corner used to look like, then. They removed the Sahara sign (the really old one, pretty much been a landmark for many years). I don't know if they have started on anything other then that, but you saw the parking lot it is going to be in, I would assume, if you were at the intersection.

Woohoo!

"The Drive," GM's outdoor "autotainment" driving experience is set to open in Las Vegas at the Sahara Hotel & Casino April 10, and GM wants you to start planning it into your next trip to Sin City.

The Drive includes two separate driving courses on the 11-acre site, a high-performance loop (pictured above) and an off-road adventure. According to Steve Tihanyi, GM's director of marketing and entertainment alliances (!), “‘The Drive’ represents a significant marketing opportunity for General Motors, allowing us to showcase our products in a unique fashion that will provide a fun-filled time for the millions of people who live in or visit Las Vegas."

A $10 ticket gets you a ride in your choice of the Chevy Corvette coupe and convertible, Pontiac GTO, Cadillac CTS-V, Pontiac Solstice roadster, Cadillac STS-V, Saab 9-3 convertible, and Chevy SSR on the performance track, or the HUMMER H2, HUMMER H2 SUT, mid-size HUMMER H3, 2007 Cadillac Escalade, 2006 Chevy Silverado Diesel and the 2007 Chevy Tahoe on one of the two dirt tracks.

If you're planning a trip to Vegas, you can get tickets to The Drive online at VEGAS.com or LasVegas.com.

Hours of operation: Open daily, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Cost: $10 per ticket. Tickets are good for entry any time between 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. One ticket entitles the driver to a choice of the following:
Two experiences on the Performance Course, or
Two experiences on the Off-road Course, or
One experience on the Performance Course plus one experience on the Off-Road Course
Discounted tickets for Nevada residents, military personnel and GM Rewards Cardmembers can be purchased at the attraction box office only. From April 10-30, 2006 admission for Nevada residents with ID will be free.

Payment options: Cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express.

Reservations: Not applicable.

Location: At the Sahara Hotel and Casino on the corner of Paradise Road and Sahara Avenue.

Age/Height/Weight restrictions:
Drivers: Must be 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license to operate the vehicles. Drivers are required to have individual health and auto insurance, but proof of insurance is not necessary. All drivers must pass a breathalyzer test and sign a waiver of liability.
Passengers: Must be four years old or older and/or more than 40 pounds. Some vehicles cannot accommodate passengers.

Review: With the hottest cars, trucks and SUVs around and the ideal track to test them out on, General Motors makes dreams come true with THE DRIVE.
Modeled after "AutoShow in Motion," a similar attraction that travels around the country, THE DRIVE is an automotive performance park giving drivers the chance to take a Chevrolet Corvette or HUMMER H2 out for a spin and see what these amazing vehicles are capable of doing.

The performance course features a paved, half-mile track filled with jogs and turns to give drivers a taste of what a sports car can do. The course will get your adrenaline pumping and leave a smile plastered on your face for days.

The off-road course consists of two equally exciting trails: the HUMMER course and the SUV course. Reserved excusively for its namesake, the HUMMER course features a foothill climb, v-ditch, sloped banks, moguls, obstacles and vertical steps. One hill, featuring a 60 percent grade, will leave you gasping at the HUMMER's ability to tackle any obstacle. The SUV course is designed for testing any other type of sport utility vehicle. All drivers will be accompanied by either a professional or right-seat driver.

Vehicles that visitors can take for a spin on the performance course include the Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet SSR, Pontiac GTO and the Saab 9-3 Convertible. Among the off-road course vehicles available are the HUMMER H2, HUMMER H3, Chevrolet Silverado Duramax Diesel, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon and the Cadillac Escalade.

Founded in 1908, GM is the world's largest automaker and sells vehicles in 200 countries under the brands of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, HUMMER, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Vauxhall.
