Tranny Rattle

Bought a 2001 Sunfire 2.2, 5spd. Runs great and I'm really happy with it. Only two problems so far.
1) I can't figure out how to adjust the parking brake. I've done this on other cars no problem, but the setup on this car seems different.
2) there is a rattling noise that comes from the tranny I think when the car is in gear and I'm just starting out. It doesn't happen if I'm hard on the gas. Actually it seems to be worse when I'm driving nicely. To my ear, it sounds like some kind of heat shield or something rattling. Anyone else had this problem?

1) I'll have to get back to you on this one, and by the time I do, somebody else will have answered.

2) The famous (infamous?) Getrag "pennies in a can" noise. Very, very common. As far as I know it's nothing serious- just kind of annoying.

I'll go check the Bible on how to adjust that and if someone else hasn't already answered, I'll get you an answer to that too.

Okay- according to the Bible the parking brake is self-adjusting. Simply apply fully and release 4-6 times. That's all the book says. Good luck, man.

To adjust the parking brakes, drive backwards and then apply the brakes, its self adjusting. As for the getrag noise, change your tranny fluid to the b & m synthetic atf(Trick Shift) fluid, and put about 2.5 quarts in. It will shift smoother and it lessens the noise quite a bit.

You were saying you have a rattle in youre 5 speed tranny? Is it when you dont have the clutch pressed in? or out? Some times those little springs that allow the pressure to be applied break or either fall off in which causes a rattle sound at idle. Usually then youre clutch has to be replaced its getting wornout.

Let us know if that what it is doing?

Good Luck.

^^^The rattle should just be the gears in the tranny. The getrag was made with loose gearing.

This is happening when I am not touching the clutch. From the sounds of the above posts, the loose gearing is probably the culprit and I'm going to try the trickshift fluid or something like it. Ony problem is that I haven't seen the trickshift in my local stores. Anyone have any alternate suggestions?

I got b&m synthetic atf at autozone, just go to b&ms website and look for a dealer near you from there. I've also heard good things about the mobil 1 synthetic atf, but I've never tried it. About the tranny rattle, there is a thread in transmission forum that is about 20 some pages long about it, and before that there was one even longer...its an ongoing problem that gm can't seem to fix.

That thread was exactly what I was looking for. I'm all set to change the fluid tomorrow, but I just realized that I'm not sure how to do it. Any help would be appreciated, as I haven't owed this car very long.

Thanks.

^^^

1. Raise and support the vehicle. (you can do this with car on the floor too but there will be less space)
2. Place a suitable container under the transmission assembly.
3. Remove the drain plug located on the lowest bottom of the transmission and completely drain the fluid. (It is facing the driver's front wheel)
4. Re-install the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug to 38N·m (28 lb ft).
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Remove the fill (Hex, if i remember right) plug located on the top/middle of transmission on the driver side, near the red vent cap. If you use the check level plug on the side of the transmission, you will not be able to overfill the transmission. (DO NOT FILL WITH RED VENT CAP!!!)
I also recomend to use a long funnel to fill it back up.
