yeah, so saturday night some punk ass son of a bitch cut my roof for no reason. nothing was taken--the 18" tires in the back were there, the cd player was untouched, the $20 in winning lotto tix were left too. nothing was gone and nothing left (that ive been able to find) so im not sure what the @!#$ is up with this. im laid back and dont have any enemies, so ive no idea why someone would have done this, unless it was random drunkeness or just some stupid punk kid that thought it would be fun to do. either way, its gonna run 800-1000 to have a shop put a new one on. of course since i dont have that $, it means i have to save up and do it myself, which everyone says is a bitch to do. FML for real.
omg dude I would hunt that person down and beat the $1000 to fix your car out of them. well lets look at the brighter side will your insurance help this kinda thing?

i worked in a trim shop and watched the guys do tops. they are a bit*h to do. there are so many things that can go wrong with them. and you have to do it a few times to get rid of the wrinkles.

Yeah, that does suck. But like you said it could have been worse. Maybe they were spooked by something and decided to not push it. They may come back and try again...Perhaps it's time for an alarm and get those 18's out of there.
If the car was parked in your driveway, it may be covered under your house insurance (if you have any). If they don't cover the top, you could say you had personal belongings sitting in the car that were stolen and get the money that way. This worked for a friend of mine because his sound system was not installed, it was just sitting in the trunk (he had just bought it), so it technicaly not part of the car and his dad's house insurance replaced all of it. I wouldn't get your hopes up, but its definetely worth a phone call to find out, you could also lie about where the car was parked...

yeah, clear vinyl sounds like it could be sweet... expand the hole properly, and I'd look around, price it out. I mean... they already did half the work for you.
