OOOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tuesday, May 06, 2008 11:45 PM
Ok, so today wasn't such a good day for the skunk, first I get suspended for 3 days from work, and seeing as I already had Friday off as a vacation day to go to Indy, I decided, why not head out early, I call Chris (s1lver n1p) and see if it's cool if I come down early, he says no prob, so I head home and pack up my stuff and get on my way. Well coming down 39S I hear that sound of metal breaking, took a quick scan of the gauges and noticed the oil press was dropping rather quickly, so I shut her down IMMEDIATELY. Get a hold of my pop and one of my buddies and say well, I need a lift. So dad and dusty save the day and get a trailor and come get me. So I get her home and take the oil pump/timing cover off to discover this...

30 min later I was back on the road, and heading southeast to Indianapolis. I just happen to have a few of these covers layin around the garage, ya never know when this might happen lol, guess it's time to get the hardened gears to keep this from happening again. BTW she made the 300+ mile trip no problem on the new pump/cover.

What caused it, hmmmmm....stock parts, not so stock car. I'm gonna go w/ the whole warning thing that GM says...
GMPP wrote:When extended time is spend on your rev limiter, or 2 step rev limiter, failure of your stock oil pump drive gears can occur due to the expansion of the crank pulley. The expansion is just enough to crack or shatter the inner drive gear and damage your engine

And i've been playin w/ my 2-step quite a bit lately so there ya have it.

Sounds like its time to give Frank Jr over at SMG a call. Once my cars running that will probably be my next purchase.

And for reference. To swap out front covers on the eco is trivial
1.) Remove belt.
2.) Remove Tensioner
3.) remove 10 10mm bolts
4.) remove 1 13?mm bolt
5.) pull

Then reverse. as ExESIVE said, you can do pretty much everything on an eco while its in the engine bay short of removing the crank which can be done but I wouldn't recommend it as it borders on rediculous.

I wonder how my aluminum crank pulley would handle this. I'm guessing the flats on the snout would wear before killing the oil pump. Just like the RKsport pulley....in theory.
Skunk....got any link to the quote you quoted?

It's from allecotec.com where they have the hardened oil pump gear...

Allecotec.com GMPP Hardened Oil Pump Gear

It's just what they have for the hardened gear. I've seen the same exact thing on other sites where they are selling the hardened gear.

The oil pump is directly behind the crank pulley.

Yup that's about it.

Wishing someone blows up their car is not a nice thing to do, just so you can have your parts sooner...not nice at all.

Good thing it's not an ld9 other wise quick fix wouldn't be in the book, I might have been replacing rod bearings and all sorts of stuff w/ falling oil pressure like that. This is the kinda thing that just doesn't happen all at once, this is something that has been on the verge for a while it's just something I did finally pushed it over. Discovered a few things tho.

1. Oil pressure at idle shouldn't be too far below 20psi, if it is, you might have a problem and should take a look and make sure you're ok. It's not that bad a job to even tear into the pump itself to look at the gear so I'd say it'd be worth the 15-20 min it takes to dissassemble everything to take a peak and make sure life is dandy and you won't get stranded on the side of the road lol.

2. Also, it seems as though there is a link in the pcm between the stock oil pressure sensor and the fuel pump, my car once oil pressure was gone would not start back up and the fuel pump would not kick on, after re priming after replacing the oil pump, she popped right off and started right up.

i checked my oil then checked mine at idle, im riding around 16-18 psi at idle and 20 or so at cruising.

There are several TSB's on GM SI with 01-07 eco's having this issue.

Personally I've seen it happen 3 times at my dealership.

good thing you had a gauge!

FYI, GM book time to RR a LD9 Pump is .9

Well it seems as though my w/ my oil pump on it's way out since day one of the new motor, about 3000 miles or so now the reduction in oil psi had some nasty side effects on the turbo. On my way to Winged Warrior today, an awesome local event auto x,drag, and show just to watch Chris run and have fun and I hear this nasty clanging sound. Naturally I pull over almost immediately and start pulling pipes off. I discover about 1/4" of shaft play in the turbo, yup, turbo SHOT!!!!!!!!! I'll be working on pulling it off asap and getting some pics of it. Not too sure on when the rebirth will be seeing as I just moved to Indianapolis and have yet to find a job, yeah I know kinda ass backwards but there were other circumstances surrounding the move.
